A couple of years after leaving AFC Richmond, Ted is still living in Kansas City, Missouri, working as a cashier at a grocery store. He is forced to end his shift early when he is summoned to Henry's high school for a parental meeting, alongside Michelle. A teacher was disturbed by a poem found in Henry's notebook, but Ted and Michelle realize he was quoting the song " Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos ". Ted and Michelle are on good terms and continue co-parenting Henry, although Michelle has felt stressed with her job.
Returning home, Ted is surprised when Rebecca, Keeley and Higgins visit him. While catching up, they reveal Richmond has a new women's football team and want Ted to coach it, based on his success with the men's team. Ted hesitates, but says he will think about it. Privately, it is revealed that Richmond is facing financial problems, and they are facing the same challenge that plagues other women's teams in other clubs. Ted is also surprised when his mother starts selling her items as she plans to sell their childhood home.
During the visit, Rebecca discovers a fondness for Kansas City barbecue but ruins all of her outfits with the sauce, forcing her to buy an overly bedazzled outfit from a local boutique. Higgins, unable to visit the American Jazz Museum due to a private event, instead visits the Negro League Baseball Museum and is inspired by the career of Satchel Paige. Keeley's belief in the women's team is further inspired by a visit to CPKC Stadium as they watch a Kansas City Current game.
Afterwards, Rebecca, Keeley and Higgins board a plane to return to London. Back home, Ted continues thinking about the offer. During this, it is revealed that Roy won the FA Cup as manager of AFC Richmond, Jamie has left the team, and Trent Crimm is now writing for The Guardian newspaper. Ted texts Michelle and Henry about the idea of moving the whole family to London. To his surprise, they say it would be a good idea.
S4E2 · Curiouser and Curiouser!
Back in London, Ted begins his new job as the coach of the A.F.C. Richmond women's football team, catching up with Roy. He is informed that his assistant coach, Alice Chilton, is planning to resign after Rebecca passed her over for the head coach position. He gets to meet the female team, finding that their locker room is very small and they lack many resources. During a press conference, he is bombarded with questions related to the men's team instead.
Ted begins training sessions while getting to know the team, which includes striker Josie and Gemma, twin defenders Niamh and Siobhan, and goalkeeper "Boots". Boots is a skilled goalkeeper, but no football club is willing to make offers for her as she refuses to wear gloves. Ted's personality contrasts with Alice's abrasive personality, and she finds herself annoyed by his traits. Ted also meets up with Beard, who is unable to help him in his coaching duties due to his contract with the men's team.
Keeley fights to find appropriate facilities for the women's team. After Rebecca does not approve the budget needed to build a new locker room, she convinces her to let her use the visitor's locker room instead of sharing the academy's locker room. Roy volunteers to help fix it up by removing the sabotage he previously installed. Rebecca is also bothered when Alice suggests she does not support women, and tries to prove herself as a feminist.
Seeing Beard deeply misses Ted, Roy decides to release him from his contract, using an obscure clause. During training, Josie suffers a severe injury and Alice accompanies her to the hospital, where the injury is revealed to have her benched for the rest of the season. On Alice's final day, Ted reveals the new locker room for the team, and also privately tells Alice he researched her; she suffered a similar injury that ended her playing career and steered her toward coaching. Ted recognizes what she can bring to the team and asks her to stay on. She agrees, and Beard also arrives to join Ted's staff. Privately, Rebecca and Higgins discuss the long-term viability of the women's team, which is not just looking bleak, but it could also derail investment in the men's team as well.
S4E3 · Richmond's Got Talent
Lady Greyhounds lose their remaining striker due to pregnancy leave. With their first game coming up, the staff conducts open trials to find new strikers. During this, Henry begins his school sessions in London, befriending Phoebe in the process.
During a Richmond shareholders' meeting, the news surrounding the women's team is met with disinterest. Furthermore, Higgins' report detailing the bleak financial prospects of the club are published, upsetting many that they are not investing in getting Richmond to the UEFA Champions League. Keeley is disheartened at not being informed of this, but sets out to save the team from the report. Rebecca is also forced to recoup a sponsor that pulled out of the women's team, but discovers this is affecting her relationship with Matthijs.
The tryouts prove to be harder than expected, with nearly everyone being disqualified early. Beard believes Dani Rojas' sister, Maria, has the same skills as her brother, but they are forced to disqualify her after it is clear she does not know soccer. By the end of the day, only two women, Lizzie Davis and Shannon, remain but neither are strong enough to be strikers. Without any options, they recruit both of them, with Ted admiring Shannon's energy. Alice and Ted go to speak with her old teammate Gemma, who reveals that she left football because of how hard Alice was on her when they were teammates. But when Ted reveals that Gemma was the only name Alice suggested, Gemma reconsiders and decides to play for the team while remaining in law school.
Keeley struggles in keeping the women's team afloat, to the point that she is unable to get the uniforms. Roy then gets Phoebe to help her in making the uniforms with her friends, finishing them just in time for the first game. The game almost ends with no plays, but Alice gets Gemma to enter the game, and she scores the winning goal. Roy visits Keeley, giving her a new report to convince her not to give up on her plans. After failing to show up multiple times, Rebecca finally meets with Matthijs for a date.
S4E4 · Greyhounds' Day Off
Trent Crimm invites Dr. Sharon to his podcast, Through the Laces, to discuss her book. The book's content is supported by the events of the episode.
Ted, Beard and Alice are aware of problems within the team, requiring them to disband cliques in the locker room. Ted and Beard realize they need either a common goal or a common enemy to unite them. When a squabble breaks out in the locker room, Ted decides to cancel training and enlist all the girls in the newly reinstated quiz night at the Crown & Anchor, with Ted choosing their teams. While it seems that they finally bonded, the team gets into another brawl when Gemma is accused of cheating, landing the team in jail.
Keeley encourages Rebecca to meet with Zelda Southport, a woman who has made a name for herself financing women's football clubs. Keeley is enthralled by Zelda but Rebecca is hesitant, as she believes Zelda will not be a great investment. While discussing this with Roy, Keeley realizes he wants to get back together with her. She states that she is unable to see him commit himself to a relationship given he has not dated a single woman since they broke up, so Roy sets out to date 10 different women to be sure that Roy genuinely wants her. Roy tries to speedrun the dates and ends up hooking up with a bartender until he injures his knee again. At the hospital, Jenni takes him to a friend specialist, Dr. Erin Beaumont, and they end up bonding.
Zelda gets the whole team released using her connections, arranging for their charges to be dropped. Higgins arrives, confirming that their next match at Women's FA Cup will be Chelsea F.C. at home, exciting the team. Keeley takes a picture of the team and Zelda quietly encourages her that it is a prime marketing opportunity. As consequence of their actions, Ted forces the team to run to the pub and clean it up.
