Complete story — includes the ending

Jamie has Fergus write a note to be sent to a printer; Fergus grabs one of "Dr. Rawlings"'s manuscripts, without realizing, to write the note on. Jamie, joined by Claire, then leads the militia to Brownsville. As they travel, the camp is infiltrated by Josiah Beardsley – or, rather, his twin brother Keziah. Jo admits that both he and Kezzie are indentured servants to a man named Aaron Beardsley, and Jamie resolves to buy their contracts while sending Roger ahead with the militia. However, Beardsley's wife, Fanny, is largely unhelpful, mostly to hide the fact that she has bludgeoned Beardsley in the attic and left him lying there for days, taking revenge on a man who raped and beat her. She then gives birth to her child, conceived of a love affair between herself and a (Black) slave. She abandons her daughter with the Frasers, who bring the child with them after finding Jo and Kezzie's contracts and putting Aaron Beardsley out of his misery.
