1. Fire in the Hole
Deputy U.S. marshal Raylan Givens is removed from his post in Miami and reassigned to Lexington after killing cartel associate Tommy Bucks when he pulls a gun. Chief deputy marshal and his former FLETC associate Art Mullen asks him to go to his home county of Harlan to look into white supremacist Boyd Crowder, who Raylan worked in a coal mine with when they were young. Boyd's brother Bowman is killed by his abused wife Ava, and Raylan protects her from Boyd's man Dewey Crowe. Boyd holds her hostage, forcing her to call Raylan for help. As they face off, Ava pulls a gun on Boyd and Raylan shoots him while he is distracted. He visits his court reporter ex-wife Winona Hawkins and wonders if he would've shot Bucks no matter what, remarking that he never thought of himself as angry. She claims he is "the angriest man I've ever known."
2. Riverbrook
Raylan visits a now religious Boyd in a prison hospital. Ava tries to seduce Raylan, but he turns her down to not compromise her as a witness against Boyd. Robber Douglas Cooper escapes from prison to recover a money stash, agreeing to give a cut of it to his ex-wife Shirley Kelso and her cousin Dupree in exchange for their help. Dupree shoots him when he accidentally leads them to the wrong house, and he points Raylan the correct way when found. Dupree takes the house's residents hostage when he learns they spent the money and asks Shirley to turn the lights off when Raylan confronts him. She does, but turns them back on for shooting Cooper, allowing him to be killed by deputy marshal Tim Gutterson. Raylan escorts Cooper to jail after he recovers, who wonders if he still has a chance with Shirley.
3. Fixer
Local informant and bookmaker Arnold Pinter sends his enforcer Curtis Mims to collect from debtor Travis Travers, who convinces Mims and Pinter's girlfriend to kidnap him and "torture" her until he gives up his money. Raylan arrives at Pinter's house to give him reward money for a fugitive he informed on, but Mims convinces him to come back later and plans to kill him. Travers kills Mims when he annoys him and tries to kill Raylan when he returns, but Raylan outmaneuvers him and kills him first. He later visits Ava and kisses her.
4. Long in the Tooth
Former cartel accountant turned dentist Roland Pike puts himself on the cartel's radar when he attacks a rude client. Raylan is sent to Los Angeles to catch him, while cartel head Gio Reyes sends hitmen to kill both men. Roland and his girlfriend try to get across the border with help from a coyote, but Roland kills him when he tries to rape her. Raylan kills the hitmen when they confront him and tracks down Roland just as he is shot at by a cartel sniper. Knowing the sniper will kill them all if he has to come closer, Roland stands and allows himself to be shot.
5. The Lord of War and Thunder
Raylan infiltrates the home of a fugitive by posing as a landscaper, having a tense moment with the man's wife but convincing her to stand down. Raylan's criminal father Arlo vandalizes the home of debtor Stan Perkins, who sends his nephews to take back property Arlo stole, injuring Raylan's aunt and stepmother Helen in the process. Arlo has a heart attack while beating the nephews, forcing Raylan to step in. He learns from Boyd's cousin Johnny that Perkins is a drug smuggler, and is warned that Boyd's father Bo is being released from prison soon and will want revenge on Ava for Bowman. Raylan finds drugs in Perkins's house, but realizes that Arlo set them both up by stealing Perkins's drugs and planting some to get him arrested. He confronts Arlo, who refuses to tell the truth, and promises to put him in jail after realizing Helen planted the drugs and lied to him.
6. The Collection
Raylan visits Boyd and asks for incriminating evidence on Arlo. Winona asks Raylan to look into her husband Gary's possibly illegal activities, which he warns Gary to keep her out of. He is sent to Cincinnati when embezzler Owen Carnes tries to sell Hitler paintings to gallery owner Karl Hanselman, who reveals they are fake. When Carnes and his wife Caryn confront the seller, she has Greg Davis, a worker she is having an affair with, kill Carnes to prevent him from going to trial and losing Caryn their assets. The death is staged as a suicide, but Raylan, suspecting foul play, confronts Greg and warns him that killing with witnesses always creates more death. Frightened, Greg refuses to kill the seller when Caryn orders him to and sells her out to the police. Hanselman explains to Raylan why he collects Hitler paintings: his father did as well, so in defiance, he made a hobby of buying and burning them. Moved by this, Raylan returns to Boyd and turns down his offer of discovered information.
7. Blind Spot
After Johnny threatens Ava, hitman Red attacks her and Raylan. Raylan wounds him, but he escapes. He has Harlan sheriff Hunter Mosley help him interrogate Johnny, who insists he was just trying to scare Ava out of Kentucky to save her from Bo. He then visits Boyd, who points out that the target could have been himself. Red returns to his cartel handler and they are visited by Mosley, also working for the cartel. He kills the handler when he gets the order to kill them, then calls Raylan, having kidnapped Ava, and orders them to meet. He and Red take Raylan and Ava, only for Ava to attack Red, distracting Mosley and allowing Raylan to arrest him. Boyd is almost attacked in prison for talking to Raylan, but Bo steps in to protect him.
8. Blowback
Bo is released after Mosley's arrests are reviewed. "Security consultant" Wynn Duffy visits Winona's house and makes veiled threats towards her, though Gary denies knowing him. AUSA David Vasquez comes to the Lexington office to interview Raylan about Boyd's shooting, but is interrupted by an inmate taking a pair of guards hostage. Needing to avoid more scrutiny by killing him in front of Vasquez, Raylan earns his trust with fried chicken, talking the man into surrendering. Vasquez reveals that Boyd's lawyer is using Raylan and Ava's relationship to claim that Bowman's murder and Boyd's shooting were premeditated, getting Boyd released early. Raylan greets him and promises to put him back in jail, though Boyd remains pious.
9. Hatless
Art has Raylan take time off following Boyd's release, and he gets into a fight with a pair of bar patrons that take his hat. Winona tells him about Duffy as she tends to his injuries. Pinter explains that Duffy works under a man named Emmitt Arnett that Gary is in debt to, both men part of the Dixie Mafia. Gary asks a friend of his for help intimidating Duffy, but Duffy brutalizes the man. Raylan stops Gary before he can kill himself to void the debt, accompanying him to his meeting with Arnett and appeasing him by handing over Gary's lucrative property. Enraged that he is not being paid with money, Duffy pulls a gun, resulting in a fight that ends with him detained. Raylan goes back to the bar and forces the patrons to return his hat.
10. The Hammer
Boyd establishes a camp of ex-convicts that he claims to be reforming through religion. After multiple attempts on the life of eccentric and harsh judge Mike Reardon, Raylan is assigned to protect him. Reardon is cornered outside a bar by an armed man he unfairly sentenced, but Raylan finds him and distracts the man, allowing Reardon to shoot him. As thanks, Reardon agrees to renegotiate Ava's parole, allowing her to leave Kentucky, though she refuses to go. Boyd, now morally opposed to the production of meth, burns a lab when local cooks refuse to stop, unwittingly killing one in the process. When Raylan learns the cook was an informant, he tracks down a man Boyd attacked and tries to strong-arm him into testifying, only to give up when he realizes the man does not know what Boyd looks like.
11. Veterans
The marshals arrest Boyd and his men for parole violations, but they refuse to implicate him for burning the lab. Raylan visits an imprisoned Mosley to ask for information on Bo, who reveals that Arlo was tasked with running Bo's business while in prison and lost money. Arlo refuses Raylan's protection despite Bo's men shooting up his house. Raylan goes looking for the remaining cooks, only for Bo to have them killed for selling on his territory. Believing Boyd killed them, Raylan goes to confront him and finds Dewey hitchhiking, having been kicked out of the camp for masturbating. He presses him into revealing one of Boyd's men was a meth cook, giving him an excuse to search the camp again. Dewey discreetly calls ahead and Boyd's men hide the cook until the marshals leave. The cook turns himself in and testifies to burning the lab alone, while Boyd spares Dewey's life and lets him leave. Raylan finds Arlo waiting for him in his motel room.
12. Fathers and Sons
Arlo agrees to inform on Bo for immunity but refuses to wear a wire. Reyes agrees to ship ephedrine to Bo and asks him to kill Raylan. Bo's men occupy Bowman's house on his orders and harass Ava, who witnesses Winona leave Raylan's motel room after having sex with him. Ava enters Bo's club armed and warns him to leave her alone. After Arlo defuses a veteran's plan to blow up a VFW building, he decides to wear the wire and the marshals give him money to appease Bo with. He silently communicates to Bo that he is bugged and arranges a meeting, giving him a fake envelope instead of the money. Bo mentions Ava threatening him, and when Raylan confronts her, she reveals she knows about Winona and refuses to leave the state. Boyd intercepts and destroys Reyes's ephedrine shipment.
13. Bulletville
Bo disowns Boyd and massacres his men, leaving Boyd to renounce his faith. Bo orders Arlo to bring him Raylan, so he lures Raylan to his motel room. Raylan notices Arlo reaching for his gun, shoots him, and kills Bo's men that burst in. Bo kidnaps Ava and shoots Johnny after realizing he conspired with Boyd to get him killed by the cartel so they could take over. He calls Raylan and demands they meet at his hunting cabin, and Boyd joins him to help rescue Ava. They kill Bo's men, but Reyes's niece and nephew arrive and kill Bo. Boyd and Raylan kill the nephew, and Raylan tries to stop Boyd from pursuing the niece. Boyd points out that Raylan's gun is empty and calls him "the only friend I have left in this world" before driving away. Raylan points his gun at him and mimes firing it.
Season 2
1. The Moonshine War
Raylan follows and incapacitates Boyd before he can kill Gio Reyes's niece. He takes her to Miami and orders Reyes to square things between them, backed by the local chief deputy marshal. Raylan is offered his job in Miami back, but he declines and returns to Kentucky. Harlan marijuana grower Walt McCready calls the marshals after a pedophile harasses his teenage daughter Loretta. Raylan learns that they both work for the criminal Bennett family, who the Givens family has a long-standing feud with. Sensing police presence, he kidnaps Loretta and flees, though Raylan tracks him down and arrests him. Bennett matriarch Mags fatally poisons Walt for talking to the police and decides to raise Loretta herself. Raylan learns that Boyd has gotten a job with the Black Pike Coal mining company.
2. The Life Inside
Boyd, now living with Ava, insists to a doubtful Raylan that he is doing honest work. Raylan demands Arlo Givens return the money he was supposed to give Bo Crowder, though he pretends he gave it to Bo. Mags tells Loretta that Walt left town. Raylan and Tim are assigned to escort heavily pregnant inmate Jamie Berglund to a hospital. She is freed by a pair of criminals who are working with her and the guard father to sell the child, though unbeknownst to her, the guard has instructed criminal Jess Timmons to kill her after the birth. The marshals pull the guard's phone records and learn of his association with the criminals, while Timmons kills his accomplice when he objects to killing Berglund. The marshals arrive and Tim kills him to save her. The guard's separated wife requests to adopt the baby. A now estranged Gary Hawkins promises Raylan he will win Winona back.
3. The I of the Storm
Two men rob a Dixie Mafia drug trafficking bus that Dewey Crowe is on. He disguises himself as Raylan and robs them back, and Raylan realizes who was responsible when he is called by police chief and Mags's son Doyle. The robbers attack just as Raylan confronts Dewey. Doyle saves them, but kills the robbers after they explain his brothers Coover and Dickie hired them. Ava tells Raylan that Boyd is allowed to stay with her so long as he does honest work, though he warns her to be wary of him. White supremacist Kyle Easterly notices Boyd at work and tries to get him involved in criminal activity, so Boyd drags him with his car to ward him off.
4. For Blood or Money
Deputy marshal Rachel Brooks's parolee brother-in-law Clinton Moss attacks the manager of his halfway house for not letting him off work for his son's birthday. He steals a drug dealer's car but is intercepted by the marshals at his son's school, so he decides to meet him at a restaurant. The dealer and manager arrive simultaneously. Rachel arrives and kills the former before he can hurt anyone, though the present Clinton bought for his son is destroyed in the crossfire. She allows the boy to visit him in custody. Gary decides to officially divorce Winona, though Raylan suspects this to be a manipulation tactic. Kyle asks Boyd if he wants to take part in a robbery that would make him out to be heroic.
5. Cottonmouth
An imprisoned Dewey tells Raylan that the Bennetts are planning "something big." Raylan realizes Walt's welfare checks are being cashed with forged signatures and Arlo gives him the location of Harlan's forging man. He tricks Coover into going to the man's place, confirming that the Bennetts are involved in Walt's disappearance. Boyd overhears Kyle and his friends plotting to kill him during the robbery, so he leaves a note for Ava to call Kyle's phone at a certain time. The men take money guarded by foreman Shelby Parlow and plan to blow up the mine with him and Boyd inside. Ava calls Kyle, which Boyd uses to kick the other men out of the trailer, claiming the cell signal will interfere with the explosives. He hides them in the money, killing Kyle and his friends when he detonates them. Parlow agrees to cover for Boyd and he returns to Ava, giving her the remaining money and deciding to go back to his criminal life. Raylan gives Loretta his number to call if she is ever in danger.
6. Blaze of Glory
Ava backs up Boyd's claim of being forced into the robbery to the ATF. Gary takes out a mortgage loan on his and Winona's house so he can buy a racehorse. Frustrated, she steals a hundred dollar bill from her courthouse's evidence locker, only for it to be stolen when the bank she checks its validity at is robbed, forcing her to ask Raylan for help. The oldest robber sets up his accomplices with a fake suicide vest, sends them to rob another bank, and anonymously calls the police. Raylan arrives and quickly arrests them. Art realizes the man was misleading them and tracks him to an airfield before he can flee with the money. Raylan recovers the bill and returns it to Winona.
7. Save My Love
Winona claims that Raylan took the wrong bill. Gary approaches Duffy with an "exciting investment opportunity." Boyd is promoted to Black Pike's security team by vice president Carol Johnson. Raylan learns that Tim already entered the bills into the county's database and sent the data to the FBI. When he tells Winona, she admits she took all of the money from the locker, so Raylan helps her sneak it back into the courthouse, though Mike Reardon interrupts by asking her to transcript an accidental death case involving Black Pike. He ejects the plaintiffs when they refuse to settle down, so they call in a bomb threat that gets the courthouse evacuated. Raylan finds a sniper rifle that would have been used to kill Reardon, and Winona returns the money just before Art can walk in on her.
8. The Spoil
Boyd blocks Bennett attempts to prevent local landowners from selling to Black Pike, so Doyle has him falsely arrested and Johnson bails him out. Following the bomb threat, Raylan is assigned to protect Johnson at a county meeting. She tries to convince the residents to sell their land to her, but Mags sways them to her side and announces a party at her house. Dickie and Coover attack Boyd, but Ava fights them off. Johnson visits Arlo to ask him to sell, while Helen Givens pays Raylan to leave Harlan with the money Arlo owes the marshals. Raylan stops one of the plaintiffs from killing Johnson, while her brother is caught trying to kill Reardon. Raylan tells Helen he lied about leaving Harlan and keeps the money to return to the marshals.
9. Brother's Keeper
At the party, Johnson sits down with Mags, who has made a deal with Boyd behind her back. Boyd explains that Mags was planning to get more money from Black Pike by selling them land that requires a new road, the land for which is where Arlo's house is, which Boyd has convinced him to sell to Mags. Johnson is forced to agree to buy all the land. Loretta notices Coover wearing Walt's watch. She calls Raylan but is caught by Coover, who calls Dickie for help, only to choke him out when he mocks him over Mags's favoritism towards Loretta. Raylan forces Dickie to tell him that Coover is taking Loretta to the mineshaft where they disposed of Walt's body. Raylan is attacked by Coover when he arrives, but Raylan throws him into the shaft to his death. The next day, Mags arrives on the scene and begs to see Loretta, but Raylan reveals she has already been given to child protective services.
10. Debts and Accounts
Walt's death is blamed on Coover, while Mags disowns Dickie for giving him up to Raylan. Boyd visits Johnny Crowder, now paraplegic after being shot by Bo, and convinces him and their former associate Derek "Devil" Lennox to help him take over Harlan. Winona begins to finalize her divorce, and Raylan posits moving to Glynco, Georgia together, where he would work as a FLETC instructor. They are attacked by a pair of hitmen, who Raylan kills, and Winona agrees to move with him. Boyd meets with Ava and the two kiss.
11. Full Commitment
Ignoring Art's warnings not to investigate the hitmen, Raylan stakes out Winona's house. He notices a car watching it and confronts the driver, learning that the company he works for is associated with Duffy and that Gary hired the hitmen. He drags Gary to Duffy in hopes that Duffy will kill him, but gives Gary the opportunity to run, which he takes. Boyd and Arlo rob Dickie's marijuana operation, though Dickie recognizes a masked Arlo's gait. He breaks into Arlo's house while he is out and plans to hold Helen hostage until he gives back his product, but kills her when she pulls a gun on him.
12. Reckoning
Arlo blames Raylan for Helen's death. Mags refuses to give Dickie to Raylan and laments that she never wanted to be a criminal, but had to take it up after her husband's death. Dickie asks Doyle to kill Jed Berwind, his henchman and a witness to Helen's murder. Raylan saves Jed when Doyle approaches him, and Jed informs him of the robbery. Boyd points out to Raylan that the Black Pike deal has not gone through yet, so Raylan convinces Arlo to pull out of the deal unless Mags gives up Dickie. Raylan prepares to kill him, but his comments about Helen make Raylan change his mind and he instead sends Dickie to prison. After Helen's funeral, he learns that Jed was pressed into confessing to killing Helen, while Mags promises Dickie she will "take care of it" upon his release.
13. Bloody Harlan
Winona tells Raylan that she is pregnant. Despite Boyd returning the money he stole from Dickie, the Bennetts send men to Johnny and Ava's houses. The Bennett men are all killed, but Dickie manages to shoot Ava and flee. Loretta steals a gun from her foster home and pays petty criminal Wade Messer to drive her to the Bennetts's property, but he alerts them when he realizes she plans to kill Mags. Raylan visits Messer but is subdued by a waiting Dickie. Boyd arrives and saves Raylan, who makes Dickie take him to Mags. Loretta arrives first and corners Mags, while Doyle and his men surround Raylan. The marshals, alerted by Winona, kill Doyle and arrest Dickie. Despite Mags admitting to killing Walt, Raylan convinces Loretta to spare her. Before Mags goes outside to be arrested, she asks Raylan to drink moonshine with her and settle their family feud with a handshake. She dies after shaking his hand, having poisoned her own drink.
Season 3
1. The Gunfighter
Boyd attacks Raylan when he refuses to give him Dickie Bennett for shooting Ava, getting him arrested. Devil Lennox refuses Boyd's order to burn Dickie's rotten marijuana because Ava delivers the message. Detroit Mob lieutenant Robert Quarles goes to Frankfort to demand Emmitt Arnett repay a loan, so Arnett sends his man Fletcher Nix to rob a local business. Raylan visits Arnett's office after learning Duffy installed the business' security system, where his secretary, on orders from Quarles, misleads him. Raylan finds Nix waiting for him in his hotel room, though he outmaneuvers and shoots him. Quarles kills Arnett and his secretary so he can take over the business.
2. Cut Ties
Knowing Boyd got himself arrested so he could kill Dickie in prison, Raylan changes his testimony to get Boyd released and has Dickie moved to solitary confinement. Boyd picks a fight to get placed next to him and bribes guard Ash Murphy to get into his cell, where he demands the location of Mags Bennett's remaining money. Dickie explains that it is being held by crime boss Ellstin Limehouse, who will only give it to him. Federal witness Walter Vondas tortures and kills the WITSEC agent who relocated him, planning to sell the locations of the other witnesses he hid. Art is assigned to protect Vondas, who realizes what happened when Vondas's car's GPS puts him at the time and place of the murder. He arrests Vondas as hitmen arrive to kill the witness Rachel is guarding. Art arrives just in time to help her kill them.
3. Harlan Roulette
Boyd beats Devil for disobeying him about the marijuana, and he begins to doubt Boyd's leadership. Boyd retakes a bar that was previously owned by Johnny Crowder. Murphy, having overheard Dickie talking to Boyd, agrees to help him escape for a cut of Mags's money. Raylan pursues Wade Messer after he steals for Glen Fogle, a sadistic drug supplier who works under Duffy. Messer's accomplice is arrested, so Fogle bails him out and kills him. Raylan suspects Fogle due to how easily he paid bail, so Duffy orders Fogle to kill him. He has Messer lure Raylan to his house, but Raylan sees through the ruse and asks Messer to summon Fogle. He tries to make a deal when Raylan confronts him, enraging his henchman, and they shoot and kill each other. Raylan attacks Duffy for trying to have him killed and drops a bullet on him as a warning. An observing Quarles threatens Raylan, who takes a picture of him before leaving.
4. The Devil You Know
Quarles hires Devil to kill Boyd and take over his operation. Having befriended Dickie, Dewey Crowe jumps into the staged brawl that will get Dickie sent to the infirmary as part of the escape, forcing Murphy and prison doctor Lance to sneak them both out. Raylan hits Murphy with his car while confronting him. Dickie calls Limehouse and asks to pick up the money. Lance's associates accompany him to the dropoff spot, where Limehouse and his lieutenant Errol Butler kill the men. Limehouse reveals to Dickie that Mags spent most of the money. As thanks to Limehouse for saving him, Dickie claims to have killed the men when Raylan arrives, being sent back to prison. Devil seemingly convinces Johnny to help him, only for him to alert Boyd, who kills Devil when confronted.
5. Thick as Mud
Limehouse reveals to Errol that he lied to Dickie and kept Mags's money for himself. Winona tells Raylan she loves him but is tired of trying to change him. Desperate for money, Lance pretends to remove Dewey's kidneys and tells him he needs to buy them back. Dewey commits a series of meager robberies and shelters in the back room of a store. Local nurse Layla helps Raylan realize Dewey did not actually have his kidneys removed, and Dewey surrenders when Raylan explains this to him. A hospitalized Murphy dies of a stroke and Raylan realizes Layla was the one monitoring him. Lance sedates him when he goes to her house and plans to harvest his organs, but Layla kills him for slowing them down. Raylan takes Lance's gun and kills her before she can finish him off. Boyd rejects Quarles's offer of partnership. Raylan returns home to find Winona gone, having left a goodbye note.
6. When the Guns Come Out
Quarles's man Tanner Dodd robs Boyd's drug stash house, which is witnessed by prostitute Ellen May. She identifies Tanner when Raylan questions her, but Tanner escapes when confronted. Limehouse deduces that Errol set up the robbery and warns him to ensure Tanner's silence. After learning Raylan sent his photo to the FBI, Quarles kills Brady Hughes, a kidnapped prostitute he has been beating for stress relief. Raylan learns that the money Winona returned is missing, and his state trooper friend Tom Bergen tracks her to her sister's house. She denies taking the money and tells Raylan she still loves him, but knows he will not change. Raylan realizes the courthouse's evidence clerk stole the money, who flees to Mexico with it.
7. The Man Behind the Curtain
Arlo Givens, deteriorating mentally and believing Limehouse is hiding Raylan's deceased mother, tries to kill him and is beaten. Limehouse spares Tanner on the condition that he feeds him information about Quarles. Raylan moves into an apartment above the High Note bar, and Quarles tries to hire him, under the impression that he works for Boyd. Quarles bribes Harlan sheriff Tillman Napier to close Johnny's bar, so Boyd meets with Shelby Parlow and offers to back him for sheriff in the upcoming election. FBI agent Jerry Barkley comes to Lexington and warns Raylan to stop investigating above his jurisdiction. Raylan tracks down Detroit boss Theo Tonin's son Sammy when he comes to Kentucky, discovering that he hates Quarles. Knowing Sammy will not oppose him, Raylan shuts down several of Quarles's profitable venues. Quarles orders Sammy to implicate Raylan as corrupt, then tracks Gary Hawkins to Tulsa.
8. Watching the Detectives
Barkley overhears Sammy claiming Raylan works for Boyd. Quarles kills Gary on the lawn of his old house with the bullet Raylan threw at Duffy. Barkley and David Vasquez confront Raylan with corruption accusations, while Quarles and Duffy frame him as unstable when called in for questioning, marking him as a suspect in Gary's murder. Winona finds the gun that killed Gary in his house, which she uses to clear Raylan's name but asks him to not look for her again. Napier and Tanner frame Boyd for a bombing attempt on the former's life, getting him arrested. Theo cuts Quarles out of Detroit due to his repeated failures, so he starts using oxycodone to cope with his stress and agrees to meet with Limehouse.
9. Loose Ends
Delroy Baker, Ellen May's pimp, forces his prostitutes to rob a bank, though one is killed and he kills another to ensure his safety. Ellen May escapes and runs to Ava, who kills Delroy when he comes for Ellen May. Errol and Tanner rob the man who sold the latter the bomb, and he tricks Tanner into stepping on an S-mine. Errol kills him before he can disarm it and leaves Tanner to die, so he calls the police for help. He accidentally drops his gun before Raylan can get information about Quarles, triggering the mine and killing him. Boyd attends a sheriff debate after being released, where he sways the crowd to Parlow's side. He allows Ava to take over Audrey's, Delroy's brothel. Raylan sees Errol deliver money to Tanner's mother and realizes he was under Limehouse's employ. He asks Limehouse about Quarles but is turned away.
10. Guy Walks Into a Bar
Napier wins, but because Boyd convinced his sister to take a job with the county, the position is temporarily given to Parlow due to nepotism laws. Raylan learns that Dickie may be released from jail due to lack of evidence for his crimes and fails to get Jed Berwind to testify. At Dickie's hearing, Raylan falters in his testimony when recounting Helen Givens's murder, giving up and allowing him to be released. Brady's friend Donovan confronts Quarles. He terrifies Donovan with stories of how his father would prostitute him as a boy, and how Theo saved him and helped him kill his father. He tries to duel Raylan at the High Note, but bartender Lindsey Salazar fends him off with a shotgun before she and Raylan have sex. Quarles later strips naked in his hotel room and approaches a restrained Donovan.
11. Measures
Theo sends a pair of hitmen to kill Quarles, who raid his room with Duffy to find Donovan tied up in the bathroom. Raylan and Art arrest the hitmen. After his release, Dickie hires drug runner Rodney "Hot Rod" Dunham and his men to get Mags's money back, unaware that Tim and Rachel are pressing Hot Rod to inform on him. Dickie gets the money's location from Ellen May, but Tim and Rachel intervene before he can make a move and confiscate Dickie's portion of Mags's money. Quarles robs and kills a pair of drug dealers in Boyd's employ, but does not get enough money to hide with Limehouse. He arranges a drop with Napier at Audrey's, who gives the location to Boyd when pressed, and Quarles is captured. Dickie convinces Errol to help him get Mags's money, but he asserts that they will need Boyd's help.
12. Coalition
Quarles tricks his guards and escapes. Boyd warily agrees to help Dickie after learning from Errol that Mags's money may be in a Harlan bank. Assuming Quarles will go to Duffy, Boyd instructs him to plant a bomb in Quarles's car. Aware of Boyd's plan, Limehouse tells Quarles to kill him after the robbery, secretly hoping they will kill each other. Arlo hallucinates Helen telling him to attack Ava, which he does before fleeing, and she calls Boyd for help. Dickie incapacitates Johnny and forces Errol to reveal who has Mags's money: Loretta McCready. Raylan is waiting for him at Loretta's, having been tipped by Limehouse, and he shoots Dickie. Quarles goes to Johnny's bar to kill Boyd, only for Duffy to detonate the bomb, which fails to kill Quarles and catches a nearby Bergen's attention. Raylan arrives shortly after to find Bergen dying and Quarles gone, with Johnny claiming Quarles shot Bergen.
13. Slaughterhouse
Quarles kidnaps a pair of boys and calls Theo, who demands half a million dollars for him to return to Detroit safely but permanently cuts ties with him. Limehouse spares Errol despite his repeated betrayals but warns him to leave Kentucky. Quarles uses the hostages to force Raylan to go with him to Limehouse, where he tries to rob him. Errol ambushes Quarles and they shoot each other, while Limehouse cuts the latter's arm off with a cleaver. As he dies, he reveals that Arlo killed Bergen. Parlow receives an anonymous tip about Devil's murder from Johnny, wanting revenge on Boyd for getting him crippled. Boyd and Arlo are arrested, and he tells Arlo he sees him as a father. Arlo confesses to both Bergen and Devil's murders and Boyd is released. Raylan discusses the situation with Winona. As he leaves, he mentions his belief that Arlo, in his delirium, thought Quarles was Boyd and Bergen was Raylan.
Season 4
1. Hole in the Wall
In 1983, a man falls from a plane to his death. In the present, Raylan arrests fugitive Jody Adair and puts him in the trunk of his car as a favor to bondswoman Sharon Edmunds. Teen criminal Roz finds a bag in the wall of Arlo Givens's abandoned house, but she is chased away by Harlan constable Bob Sweeney and steals Raylan's car. He and Bob track the car to a junkyard, where Roz and Jody attack them, though they disarm them and Raylan re-arrests Jody. Raylan finds an ID for "Waldo Truth" in the bag and asks an imprisoned Arlo about it, who says nothing. A drug dealer working for Boyd finds religion through traveling Signs preacher Billy St. Cyr. Ex- military police officer and old friend of Boyd's, Colt Rhodes, comes to Harlan and begins working as his enforcer. Colt kills the dealer when he misunderstands Boyd's orders. Arlo kills a prisoner who states intent to look into the bag.
2. Where's Waldo?
Ellen May joins Billy's congregation, and Boyd realizes his sister Cassie is running things while confronting him. He catches one of Duffy's men dealing heroin on his territory and tries to leverage this for a partnership with the Dixie Mafia, but Duffy kills the man to avoid this. Raylan and Art meet Truth, only to realize he is a man paid by Truth's widow to pose as him so his family could cash his welfare checks. She explains that the day the real Truth disappeared, he left with a fugitive named Drew Thompson, who authorities believed was the man who fell from the plane. Art realizes from a scar on Truth's body that Thompson used him to fake his death. Lindsey Salazar's ex-husband Randall Kusik comes to the High Note to see her.
3. Truth and Consequences
Boyd sends Colt and his man Jimmy Tolan to attack the St. Cyrs, but the latter is bitten by snakes left out for them. When he does not die, Boyd realizes Cassie has been milking Billy's snakes of their venom and reveals this before the congregation. Humiliated, Billy takes his offer of an unsafe snake, being bitten and dying. Lindsey explains to Raylan that she and Randall used to run criminal scams together, which he went to jail for while she reformed. Raylan talks to Thompson's widow, but she is kidnapped by a Detroit man while he is distracted by a corrupt FBI agent. Raylan forces her location out of the agent, who commits suicide after giving it up. The marshals rescue her before she can be tortured for Thompson's location, and she explains that Thompson told her he was going to die after seeing Theo Tonin kill a federal witness. Raylan returns to his apartment to find his money stolen and Lindsey gone.
4. The Bird Has Flown
Randall and Lindsey plan to get into cockfighting with Raylan's money. Lindsey calls Raylan after Randall beats a cashier who was flirting with her, and he intercepts them and fights Randall. Lindsey incapacitates them both and leaves, while Raylan learns that the couple already spent his money. Ellen May returns to Audrey's, but Ava wants to have her killed to prevent anyone else knowing about the murder of Delroy Baker, which Boyd is against until Ellen May mentions Delroy's murder in public. He instructs Colt to kill her, but when he stops at a gas station to do heroin, she vanishes.
5. Kin
Colt sees Ellen May being approached by a police car on security footage while telling Boyd that he killed her as ordered, while Shelby Parlow hides her from Colt. Jerry Barkley, working for Detroit underboss Nick Augustine, is killed by him after the marshals take the Thompson case from the FBI. Augustine orders Duffy to find Thompson, who asks Boyd to do it. Roz tells Raylan that her stepfather Josiah Cairn sent her to find the bag. He tells Raylan that Thompson injured himself jumping from the plane, so Arlo and Bo Crowder sent him to the "hill people." Raylan and Boyd are captured upon going to them separately, but Raylan saves them by calling for his mother's cousin amongst them. She lets them go and claims Thompson no longer lives with them. Raylan goes to see Josiah, but only find his severed foot and ankle monitor.
6. Foot Chase
Raylan and Parlow track down Roz, who explains that men abducted Josiah and cut off his foot to neutralize his monitor. Arlo turns out to be the one who had Josiah captured by telling his lawyer that he was Thompson. Raylan and Parlow rescue him, and he reveals that Hunter Mosley knows who Thompson is. Colt beats up Johnny Crowder's favorite prostitute Teri, believing she has Ellen May's location, and she blames it on one of her clients when Johnny questions her. He and Colt brutalize the man. Wanting to find information on Thompson, Ava pressures Ellen May's client into getting her and Boyd invited to Tillman Napier's elite swingers party. Boyd proposes to her and she accepts.
7. Money Trap
A flashback shows Jody escaping from Edmunds and killing her. Her body is found in the present, and Jody attacks his ex-wife's friend while trying to find her. Raylan rescues the woman, and Jody confronts him at the High Note where Raylan kills him. Johnny realizes that Colt beat up Teri and failed to kill Ellen May. At Napier's party, Boyd meets the Clover Hillers, an elite society of Harlan businessmen who control the county's criminal economy, including Boyd's ventures. They order him to kill Black Pike Coal owner Frank Browning. Raylan decides to talk to Hunter when Arlo refuses to give up Thompson.
8. Outlaw
Raylan offers Hunter a deal, but he deduces that Arlo was offered the same deal and stabs him. A dying Arlo refuses to reveal Thompson's identity to Raylan. Colt is blackmailed by Ellen May, so he robs and murders a drug dealer, killing Tim's addict friend Mark for witnessing it. He leaves the money at a drop-off spot, which Johnny, actually the one who contacted him, collects. When Browning refuses to pay Boyd for protection, he tells Theo that both Browning and a Clover Hiller could be Thompson. Theo sends a hitman that kills them both, but the hitman goes to kill Boyd when he learns of his deception. Raylan intercepts the hitman and kills him. Boyd convinces Augustine to work with him over Duffy. When the Clover Hillers confront Boyd, he reveals he had Detroit dismantle their organizations and extorts them. Arlo dies and Raylan contemplates his corpse in a morgue.
9. The Hatchet Tour
Tim realizes that Colt killed Mark based on a text he sent before he died, stopping Colt from hurting Cassie when she comes looking for Ellen May. Johnny tells Boyd about the situation with Colt, who he forces to admit the truth about Ellen May and that he went to Parlow looking for her. While taking Hunter to a supermax, Raylan presses him for Thompson's identity, only for Hunter to escape the car and attempt suicide. Raylan recovers him and Parlow joins them, only for them to be waylaid by Bob getting in a gunfight with the Clover Hillers. As Raylan defuses it, Parlow thanks Hunter, who addresses him as "Drew". Bob mentions that Parlow once took responsibility for Hunter killing a Crowder, and Raylan runs outside to find that Thompson stole Bob's car. Boyd goes to Thompson's house to find the marshals searching it, realizing his identity.
10. Get Drew
With the only airfield out of Harlan being watched, Ellen May and Thompson go to Ellstin Limehouse, who decides to capture and sell them. Boyd agrees to buy them both, planning to upsell Thompson to Detroit, only for Limehouse to up his price when Boyd arrives. While he wants to take Ellen May to protect Ava, she convinces him to buy Thompson. Colt restrains Thompson in a field for Augustine to pick up, only for the marshals, alerted by Johnny, to arrive just in time and rescue him.
11. Decoy
Boyd convinces a furious Augustine to let him help find Thompson. While Tim and Art distract Colt and Detroit men with a decoy convoy, Thompson, Raylan, and Rachel hole up in Arlo's house, where Thompson explains that he trusted Arlo to burn Truth's ID. They move, but Bob, having put motion detectors in the walls after Roz broke in, arrives after they leave. A Detroit henchman arrives and beats him for Thompson's location, but when he lets his guard down, Bob stabs him and kills him with his own gun before joining Raylan. Augustine reveals Johnny's deception to Ava. Detroit man Ethan Picker and his men go to kill Thompson, but Raylan reveals that he is already gone and the police are on their way. They leave, and Raylan tells Art that, at Bob's suggestion, Rachel and Thompson escaped Harlan by train.
12. Peace of Mind
Thompson refuses to enter WITSEC until Ellen May is safe, which a Detroit mole relays to Augustine, who offers to give Boyd Johnny if he gets Ellen May. Ava confronts Limehouse, who reveals he already let Ellen May go to avoid conflict. Ellen May goes to the St. Cyr church. Raylan overhears Boyd telling Jimmy her location, so he sends Tim to get her, while Boyd sends Colt to kill her. Tim arrives just in time and kills him. While Ellen May goes into WITSEC with Thompson, Boyd and Ava decide to move Delroy's body before Ellen May can testify. Picker scopes out Winona's house.
13. Ghosts
Raylan visits Winona and finds Augustine's men demanding he take them to Thompson. He kills them and, despite Art's warnings that he will be fired if he goes after Augustine, forces Boyd to arrange a meeting, where he tries to convince Augustine to turn himself in. He refuses and declares intent to kill Sammy Tonin and become Theo's successor. Raylan greets an arriving Sammy, having called him ahead of time, and allows Picker and his men to kill Augustine. The police find Delroy's body after receiving a tip, so Boyd waives the debt of Clover Hiller and funeral home director Lee Paxton so he can steal the body. Ava goes alone to dispose of it, only to be arrested by new sheriff Nick Mooney, the entire thing having been a setup by Paxton after the police were tipped by Cassie. Theo retires and Sammy takes over, who puts Duffy in charge of the region's operations. Duffy asks Boyd to distribute heroin in Harlan. Raylan repairs the hole in Arlo's wall as Art calls him to reveal Augustine's death, in which he does not admit any part.

Dewey Crowe is released from prison and wins $300,000 in a police brutality lawsuit against Raylan, which he uses to buy Audrey's. Dewey's Floridian cousin Dilly kills a USCG officer, so Raylan partners with Miami deputy marshal Greg Sutter. Dilly's brother Daryl Jr. offers to give Raylan their associate Elvis Machado to avoid criminal charges. He makes his brother Danny kill Dilly for his recklessness, while Elvis, being driven to a setup by Daryl's sister Wendy, suspects something is off and flees. Raylan and Sutter kill him when he pulls a gun on them. Raylan calls Winona and their newborn daughter Willa upon returning to Kentucky, not revealing he was in Miami despite them living there. After killing Detroit men who try to rob him during a heroin deal, Boyd meets with Sammy Tonin, witnessing Ethan Picker kill him on orders from the Canadian mob Sammy was in debt to. Boyd convinces the Canadians to do business with him and Picker. He brutalizes Lee Paxton when he refuses to free Ava from prison, which his wife Mara witnesses. Boyd offers to buy her silence.
2. The Kids Aren't All Right
Raylan arrests Detroit accountant Charles Monroe. Loretta McCready and her boyfriend Derrick Waters short Hot Rod Dunham in a marijuana deal, so he sends sibling enforcers Jay and Roscoe to collect. Loretta begs Raylan to rescue Derrick when he is kidnapped, so Raylan saves him, trading the brothers back to Hot Rod on the condition that he leaves Harlan. He realizes that Loretta manipulated him into saving Derrick, and later meets with her social worker Alison Brander at Monroe's mansion. Art learns that Sammy contacted Raylan before he died, so he calls Detroit chief deputy Ed Kirkland and asks where Sammy was the night Nick Augustine was killed. Mara agrees to take Boyd's payout, only to agree to testify against him when Nick Mooney strong-arms her. Boyd's dealer Cyrus Boone is approached by Teri and mentions an incoming shipment, which Boyd later finds hijacked.
3. Good Intentions
Boyd and Duffy torture Cyrus until he identifies Teri. A man shows up to the mansion to harass Alison, making Monroe paranoid when Raylan asks if he was involved. Monroe tries to kill his maid, then sends her to get gold from the mansion. Raylan intercepts her and has her claim Duffy, who installed Monroe's safe, stole the gold, and he attacks Duffy and is shot by his bodyguard Mike Cosmatopolis. Paxton orders Mooney to kill Boyd, who instead hires him. The Crowes come to Harlan and Daryl discovers that Wade Messer, under Dewey's employ, stole from him on orders from Boyd. Boyd's henchman Carl Lennon brings him Teri. He calls a number on her phone and Johnny Crowder answers.
4. Over the Mountain
At Daryl's urging, Dewey takes Messer into the woods and shoots him, but he escapes. Dewey pursues him for hours and finds him badly wounded, ultimately leaving him to die. Carl discovers Johnny is working with Hot Rod. Mooney fakes Boyd's death with a corpse from Paxton's morgue. Guard Albert Fekus tries to rape Ava in prison, but she is rescued by another guard. Art meets with Canadian Al Sura, who tells him a Kentucky lawman allowed Augustine to be killed and that Picker knows about it. He uses Alison to take Daryl's teenage brother Kendal into state custody when the family refuses to leave Harlan.
5. Shot All to Hell
Boyd kills Paxton, staging it as suicide. He has a dying miner kill Mooney and pays him with Mara's money, warning her to never return to Harlan. Ava's case is void with Paxton and Mooney dead, but Fekus stabs himself with a planted shiv and frames her, getting her transferred to a state prison. Boyd outbids Johnny for Hot Rod's partnership, so Johnny pays Hot Rod's men to turn on him. Wendy comes to Harlan to take custody of Kendal. Danny kills a family friend during an argument about groceries. Tonin's consigliere Elias Marcos tortures and kills Sura for Picker's location. Raylan leans on Picker for Marcos's location and warns him to stay quiet about Augustine. He kills Marcos and arrests Theo Tonin, who was waiting nearby for Marcos to bring Picker to him. Raylan and Art learn that Picker implicated Jerry Barkley as the man who let Augustine die, only for Raylan to confess the truth to Art.
6. Kill the Messenger
Art hits Raylan after he confesses. Boyd asks a white supremacist to have his gang leader sister Gretchen Swift keep Ava safe, but Gretchen attacks her due to Boyd abandoning white supremacy. Danny attacks Alison when she checks on Kendal. Dewey plans to kidnap and ransom Boyd, but winds up taking Carl instead. Raylan tracks Danny down and finds him beating Carl, but they bluff it off as a consensual sex encounter. Raylan refuses to answer Rachel's questions about the bruise on his face. After meeting with a Mexican cartel representative about running heroin, Boyd employs Daryl to brutalize Gretchen's brother. He realizes while calling Hot Rod that he is in trouble, and offers Daryl more money to help kill Johnny.
7. Raw Deal
A man has the money he fed into a backgammon website stolen. He and a debt collector confront T.C. Fleming, the hacker who stole from him, only for the collector to kill the man and take T.C.'s girlfriend hostage. T.C. escapes when Raylan arrives, redirecting his cell signal to lead the marshals to the collector, though she gives T.C. up. With Art unwilling to talk to him, Raylan submits a transfer request for Miami. Disturbed by watching Danny kill their friend and unable to talk to Wendy, Kendal calls his uncle, Jack Anderson. Inmate Penny Cole introduces Ava to gang leader and heroin runner Judith, who orders her to have sex with a guard to aid in trafficking. She instead plants heroin on the guard to avoid this. Johnny and Boyd go to Mexico separately to meet with the cartel, where Johnny outbids him and plans to kill him after crossing the border. The Crowes save Boyd but kill Hot Rod's men before they return to the U.S., and Boyd kills Johnny when he mocks them.
8. Whistle Past the Graveyard
Cartel man Alberto Ruiz orders Boyd to take care of the bodies and tells him their business is over. They load the bodies into the back of their truck, only for PF officers to steal it, believing it has Johnny's heroin. They meet with associates of Daryl's who agree to move the drugs over the border, though Jimmy Tolan, fluent in Spanish, hears them mention that Daryl set the situation up. Judith orders Ava to get her heroin, so she seeks help from a prison nurse. Before Raylan can go to Florida with Alison to see Willa, Kendal runs away to see Jack. Wendy asks Raylan for help when Michael, a man looking for Jack, approaches her. As Kendal reveals to Jack that he knows he and Wendy are his parents, Michael arrives and Jack flees, leaving Kendal behind. Raylan hunts down and arrests both men, learning that Jack brutalized Michael's son after he was caught cheating him out of money. Empathizing with Kendal's tough home life, Raylan gives him the money he was using to go to Florida, while Alison, upset by how he used her against the Crowes, leaves him.
9. Wrong Roads
Raylan goes to Memphis to find Hot Rod after learning of Johnny's death, and is partnered with his handler, DEA agent Alex Miller. They find him dying of a gunshot after killing the man who was guarding him, while Jay and Roscoe go to Harlan to kill Boyd. They burst into one of Boyd's meetings, but Raylan and Miller arrive, shooting Roscoe and arresting them both. Daryl finds Raylan's money and Kendal claims he stole it, so Daryl confiscates it. The nurse orders Boyd to kill the man who killed her smuggling partner, which he has Jimmy do. She then orders Ava to kill Judith. Danny and Dewey are pulled over by Miller while running heroin. The former attempts to fight him, only for Dewey, fed up with his cousins' antics, to drive off with the drugs.
10. Weight
Danny's Stafford is killed by a car. Knowing that killing Judith will increase her sentence if caught, Ava breaks off her engagement with Boyd. She tries to cut a deal with Judith when alone but is attacked, forcing Ava to kill her instead. Boyd fails to get Fekus to recant his statement. Raylan calls Dewey to convince him to turn himself in, inspiring him to go to Dickie Bennett, who now uses a wheelchair after being shot by Raylan. Dickie refuses to give him up to Raylan, while Dewey tries to sell the drugs to Cyrus, who gives them back to the Crowes. Raylan finds Danny burying the dog and Danny decides to kill him, only to trip into the dog's grave and stab himself in the throat. Seeing that his business with Boyd and Picker is going poorly, Duffy brings in Katherine Hale, the widow of his mentor, for help.
11. The Toll
Knowing that Alison needs protection after Danny's death, Art gets her set up in a hotel room, only for someone to shoot him through the door. Kirkland takes over as temporary chief and questions Theo. He blames Picker for the shooting, but Tim finds evidence that exonerates him. Picker meets with Boyd and Duffy about their heroin trade and tries to have Boyd killed, only for Boyd to kill him with a pack of explosives-laced cigarettes and offer Duffy a larger cut of the profits to keep in business. Kendal confesses to shooting Art, claiming he thought that Raylan was behind the door, wanting to take revenge for Danny. Kirkland tells Rachel that Art named her as his successor, while Raylan confronts Daryl and deduces that he shot Art, promising revenge.
12. Starvation
Daryl pressures Carl into giving up the rest of Boyd's heroin. He forces Wendy to get it for him, but she is arrested by Raylan. Ava refuses Raylan's request to have Boyd find Daryl, while Boyd tries to bargain for immunity if he can get Daryl to confess. Dewey's car breaks down, so he busts into a meeting between Boyd and Daryl, boasting about killing Messer before taking the heroin. The marshals arrest him and Daryl, having heard everything through Boyd's wire. Penny is killed by a member of Gretchen's gang and Gretchen sells the woman out, which she blames on Ava. Ava agrees to help Raylan, only to learn that Boyd is cooperating. Daryl's lawyer gets him released on lack of evidence, nullifying Boyd's deal. Boyd reveals Raylan's role in Augustine's death to Tim and Rachel, though they are skeptical. He calls Jimmy and tells him to meet him with the heroin, unaware that Alberto has captured him. Raylan successfully pushes for Kendal to be given a lengthy prison sentence.
13. Restitution
Alberto has Jimmy killed and orders Boyd to bring him Daryl. Boyd changes Raylan's name to Daryl's in his phone to fool them and sets up a meeting, where Rachel and Tim arrive, killing Alberto and his men. Raylan has Wendy observe him interrogating Kendal, where she realizes he did not shoot Art. She informs Daryl of her supposed plan to sue the marshals. They meet and she manipulates him into confessing, which she reveals she recorded before drawing a gun. As Raylan watches, she kills Daryl when he tries to disarm her. Raylan informs Art of what happened when he wakes up, who thanks him for avenging him. He tells Raylan that his transfer request cleared, and Raylan promises Winona he will move south for good. Rachel and David Vasquez inform him that they are building a RICO case against Boyd. Boyd learns that Fekus recanted his statement, getting Ava released from prison, and Katherine offers him bank robbery work. Raylan meets with Ava, actually released to help with the RICO case. She admits her fear, and he promises that "everything's gonna be fine."
Season 6
1. Fate's Right Hand
A PF officer who found Johnny Crowder's body tells Raylan that Dewey Crowe witnessed his murder. Dewey is released after claiming his confession to killing Wade Messer was a joke and gets a restraining order against Raylan to prevent him from being extradited to Mexico. Raylan is approached by a man named Ty Walker, who is interested in buying Arlo Givens's property. Dewey asks Boyd for work after Audrey's is confiscated, so he is sent to distract the marshals while Boyd steals a safe deposit box, which he finds a ledger in. Upset that he was used as a decoy, Dewey confronts Boyd and laments about going back to simpler times. Believing he poses a security risk, Boyd kills him and later contemplates a sleeping Ava.
2. Cash Game
Ava discovers the ledger and shows it to Raylan. He meets with realtor Calhoun Schreier to tell him that his box was stolen, which Walker and his associate "Choo-Choo" overhear. The latter tails Raylan, who tricks him and steals his car. Tim, posing as a passing motorist, picks Choo-Choo up and learns that he, Walker, and their associate "Seabass" all work for the same person. Calhoun admits to Raylan that he has been working with the men and that the ledger contained information that could blackmail them. Boyd tries to sell it back to him, but Raylan intercepts him and takes it. Ava realizes that Calhoun has stored his money in a discontinued bank built below the Pizza Portal restaurant. Walker and Seabass approach the house of the Hutchinses, a couple who refused to sell to them, carrying plastic sheets.
3. Noblesse Oblige
At Boyd's urging, Ava visits Pizza Portal and photographs a vault in the basement. Trying to figure out where Boyd gets his explosives, Raylan questions their former mining associate Luther Kent. Boyd sends Carl Lennon's brother Earl to get explosives from Kent's son, but Raylan catches them trying to steal the weapons. Kent takes the blame for supplying Boyd despite Raylan warning him his son may go to jail anyway. The Crowders are visited by Walker's boss Avery Markham, the former leader of the Dixie Mafia, who warns them to never return to Pizza Portal, but this only leaves Boyd more determined to rob and kill him. He comments on how different Ava has been after getting out of prison, but she distracts him by having sex with him.
4. The Trash and the Snake
After Ava proves her loyalty to Katherine Hale, Katherine admits her belief that Markham, her lover, was the one who sold out his partner and her deceased husband Grady to the police. She questions Ava about Albert Fekus recanting. Duffy's explosives expert blows himself up while testing a bomb on a replica of Markham's safe. The Hutchinses are found dead of supposed carbon monoxide poisoning, but Tim finds evidence that they suffocated when their doors and windows were sealed in their sleep. Raylan learns that Dickie Bennett unwittingly sold the last of his land to Loretta McCready, which Walker tries to buy. Raylan arrives before he can hurt her, so Walker calls Markham and Raylan meets him for the first time. He fails to persuade Loretta to get out of the marijuana business, while Boyd plots to buy up land before Markham so he can grow drugs himself.
5. Sounding
Rachel and Tim get to Fekus before Duffy can, convincing him to withstand Duffy's torture until he buys the cover story. Ava leads Raylan to a fake meetup and runs to Ellstin Limehouse for help, who agrees to give her a car in exchange for her showing Errol Butler to a stash of money. Knowing he cannot be seen with Ava and out her as an informant, Raylan has Bob Sweeney take her from Errol. When Boyd begins interfering with Markham's purchases, Seabass and Choo-Choo interrogate Calhoun, who the latter accidentally kills. Planning to tunnel into the vault using an old mineshaft, Boyd hires Ava's uncle Zachariah Randolph despite his hatred of the Crowder family. Ava kisses Raylan when he promises to get her put in WITSEC, but they are interrupted by Boyd coming home.
6. Alive Day
Markham proposes to Katherine despite believing that she sold out Grady. Walker orders Choo-Choo to kill Calhoun's favorite prostitute, who saw Walker and Seabass enter his office. Choo-Choo picks her up, but is moved by her genuine kindness and expresses hesitation to Walker. Markham orders Walker to kill them both, but he is interrupted by Raylan and Tim. They fail to convince Choo-Choo that Walker is there to kill him and engage in a gunfight, during which both henchmen are shot. They escape and Choo-Choo tries to commit suicide by train, but dies of his injuries before it can hit him. Art pulls the files on Grady's arrest. Boyd falls in a hole while working in the shaft and is rescued by Zachariah. Before one of Boyd's men can realize Zachariah cut the boards covering the hole, he pushes him in to his death. Limehouse tells Boyd of Ava's visit.
7. The Hunt
Markham cuts ties with Walker after Rachel puts an APB out. Walker calls an ambulance when his car breaks down, killing the paramedics and stealing their supplies. Boyd forces Ava to go to his father's cabin with him, where they fight about the Crowder family's patterns of violence before having sex. The next day, he reveals he knows about Limehouse and suspects Raylan took her away from Errol. She admits that she is working as an informant. Realizing it is his fault for not protecting her in prison, he forgives her and tells her to keep working for Raylan until they can run away together. Instead of participating in the manhunt for Walker, Raylan takes time off to see Winona when she comes to town. She tells him she wants to raise Willa Givens together, and he promises to do so.
8. Dark as a Dungeon
Raylan cleans out Arlo's house and prepares to have his parents' remains moved to a Harlan cemetery. Walker breaks into Ava's house and forces her to tend to his wounds. When Boyd arrives, Walker offers to give him the combination to the vault. Raylan convinces Markham to put out a bounty on Walker and visits Boyd, who gives him up upon hearing of the reward. Walker shoots at Raylan while escaping and is killed. Boyd observes Markham taking his reward money from the vault. Ava is happy to accept the bounty, but Boyd is more determined than ever to rob Markham after seeing how much money he has. While Ava tells Raylan about the shaft, he realizes from her demeanor that she has been compromised. He imagines a conversation with Arlo in his shed about his childhood fear of the place, and later has his parents' tombstones removed without exhuming them.
9. Burned
Art and Raylan reveal to Duffy that they have documents confirming he sold out Grady, forcing him to cooperate with them. Katherine kills Seabass when he tries to extort her and Markham. Duffy falsely claims to Boyd that Markham is moving his money during a Pizza Portal party that night. Loretta agrees to help Boyd buy up land after Boon, Markham's sharpshooter henchman, threatens her. At the party, Markham tries to convince the locals to sell their land, but Loretta wins them over by explaining how Markham wants to buy them out. Guessing that Raylan has found her out, Ava warns Raylan of Boyd's incoming robbery, and Raylan informs Markham. When Boyd lights an explosive fuse, Zachariah chains him to a post and leaves him to die, though Carl narrowly saves him. The explosives fail to breach the vault and Markham makes plans to move the money.
10. Trust
Ava finds Dewey's necklace at Boyd's bar. The marshals set up a decoy truck that they pretend has Markham's money to mislead Boyd, though Raylan correctly suspects he will see through it. The Lennons are sent after it and are arrested. Boon kills Loretta's great-aunt to eliminate any successors to her land. Mike Cosmatopolis realizes Duffy flipped on Grady, restraining him and calling Katherine. She and Boyd set up a fake hostage situation to force Markham to give up his money, which works, though Boyd reveals Katherine's deception before leaving. David Vasquez plans to send Ava back to prison, so she offers to get Boyd to confess to Dewey's murder. She meets with him to receive the money and leave Harlan together, only to take his gun, shoot him, and drive off with the money.
11. Fugitive Number One
Art comes back from leave to take over the hunt for Ava. A hospitalized Boyd advises Raylan to find Zachariah. He and Ava flee into the mountains, but find the man who was to help her escape dead. Markham approaches the Lennons and orders Carl to kill Boyd or he will kill Earl. Carl infiltrates Boyd's room and is convinced to free him, only for Boyd to kill him and escape. Vasquez accuses Raylan of conspiring with Ava and Art tells him to come back to Lexington, but he instead rescues Earl when he learns of Boyd's escape. Katherine arrives at Duffy's RV and prepares to kill him, but she and Mike kill each other when he tries to convince her to have mercy. Raylan warns Markham to not search for Ava or Earl will testify against him. Art gives Raylan two days to catch Boyd and promises to arrest him if he does not comply.
12. Collateral
Boyd kidnaps a man and commandeers his car. Raylan encounters the hill people, displaced by pollution, and gives them Arlo's land. Duffy makes plans to leave the country. Loretta hides with Derrick Waters, only for Boon to find and hold them. Markham kills Derrick, but Loretta convinces him to spare her by promising to sway Harlan to his side. Ava flees with some of the money after learning of Boyd's escape, being caught by Bob, who is looking for Raylan after the APB put out by Vasquez. Boyd kills the driver when he offends him and Bob investigates the gunshot, getting shot by Boyd. Ava runs and is caught by Markham's men. Raylan finds Boyd and they debate about the former's motivations while trying to kill each other, though Boyd escapes. He encounters Zachariah, who blows himself up while trying to kill Boyd rather than give up Ava. Raylan drives Bob to the hospital, but is arrested upon arrival.
13. The Promise
Raylan persuades Art to free him. Ava tricks Boon into going to a fake handoff, to which he takes Loretta. Raylan beats Markham's henchman until he gives up his location, while Boyd finds Markham and kills him. Raylan arrives before he can kill Ava, and Boyd tries to provoke him into killing him. Raylan allows him to be arrested and drives Ava away, but they are cut off by Boon and Loretta. Boon and Raylan duel and shoot each other, but Loretta steps on Boon's hand to stop him from finishing off Raylan. Boon dies of his injuries and Ava drives off in Raylan's car. Four years later, Raylan works with Greg Sutter in Miami and has a healthy relationship with Winona, despite being separated, and Willa. Rachel sends him a California newspaper article with Ava in the background of a photo, which he uses to track her down and finds that she has a young son. Knowing Boyd will stop at nothing to find her if he learns of this, she begs Raylan for help. He visits Boyd, now a prison preacher, and convinces him Ava died in a car accident. Boyd asks him why he told him this in person, then realizes it is because "we dug coal together," to which Raylan responds "that's right." The episode is dedicated to the residents of Harlan, the United States Marshal Service, and Elmore Leonard, the author of the stories the series is based on.
