Complete listed story — includes the ending
1. Pilot
Carrie Mathison, working as a CIA case officer in Iraq, is told by an informant prior to his execution that an American prisoner of war has been turned by al-Qaeda. Ten months later, Carrie is working in the CIA's counterterrorism office in the United States, where she learns that Marine Sergeant Nicholas Brody has been rescued from an al-Qaeda compound eight years after going missing. Carrie concludes that Brody is the turned POW and begins illegally surveilling his household. Brody reunites with his wife, Jessica, and children Dana and Chris, unaware that Jessica has begun a relationship with Brody's friend and fellow Marine Mike Faber. Carrie discovers evidence that Brody may be communicating coded messages in his televised appearances, and shares this with Saul Berenson, her mentor and former boss at the CIA. Brody meets with the widow of Tom Walker, the other Marine captured alongside him, and claims to have not been present during Walker's death. However, Brody is later shown to remember beating Walker to death under command from al-Qaeda leader Abu Nazir.
2. Grace
Saul obtains a warrant temporarily legalizing Carrie's surveillance of Brody. Carrie meets with Lynne Reed, a CIA informant working as a consort for the Saudi Arabian Prince Farid Bin Abbud, and learns that she has video evidence of the Prince meeting with Abu Nazir. CIA deputy director David Estes denies Carrie's request to put a security detail on Lynne and instead requests that she download the content of the Prince's phone. Carrie visits her sister Maggie, a psychiatrist, to receive anti-psychotic medication, believing that undergoing formal treatment would end her security clearance at the CIA. Carrie is unable to watch Brody's garage, since her surveillance team failed to install cameras there. Brody is revealed to have converted to Islam and is seen going to his garage to recite Muslim prayer in private. He later emerges to the press in full uniform, ready to embrace his public stardom.
3. Clean Skin
Brody and his family prepare for a TV interview. Brody omits details of how Abu Nazir offered him food and comfort amidst his torture. Lynne manages to discreetly download the contents of Prince Farid's phone, but the data is of no use. That night, with no CIA security detail protecting her, Lynne is assassinated while at a nightclub with the Prince's entourage, and a diamond necklace she received as a gift from the Prince is removed from her person. The necklace is later sold for $400,000, consistent with Saul's observation that jewelry is often used to quickly transfer funds relating to terrorist activity. A young couple is seen purchasing a house in proximity to an airport.
4. Semper I
Brody is promoted to the rank of gunnery sergeant amidst his recent wave of public appearances, prompting talk of having him run for public office. Carrie's surveillance warrant on Brody expires and she is forced to uninstall her recording equipment from his home. The CIA begin investigating a number of potential recipients of the money transfer via Prince Farid's sold diamond necklace. Carrie and her team begin investigating Raqim Faisel, the man who bought the house near the airport with his girlfriend, Aileen Morgan. Brody shoots a deer during a dinner party at his house; Jessica admonishes him over his erratic behavior and demands that he seek counseling. The next night, Carrie, stripped of her surveillance cameras, follows Brody to a veterans' support group meeting and gets his attention. Brody recognizes her from the debriefing; the two instantly bond and have a flirtatious conversation.
5. Blind Spot
The CIA detain Afsal Hamid, the lone survivor of the raid on the al-Qaeda compound where Brody was rescued. Carrie summons Brody to consult on Hamid's interrogation; Brody recognizes Hamid as his guard while in captivity. Hamid gives up an email address belonging to a university where Raqim Faisel is employed. With this, the CIA are soon able to locate Raqim's home address, but find it vacated upon arrival. Brody meets with Estes and demands an opportunity to confront Hamid, his torturer, face-to-face. Hamid provokes Brody into physically attacking him, and is later found to have killed himself in his cell using a razor blade. Carrie suspects that Brody slipped the blade to Hamid during their altercation, but Saul is unable to report these findings up the chain of command given the lack of evidence.
6. The Good Soldier
In an attempt to find out who helped Hamid kill himself, Carrie has a polygraph administered to everyone who was in contact with Hamid, including Brody. Raqim and Aileen discover that al-Qaeda is also attempting to eliminate them; Raqim is later killed, while Aileen manages to escape. The CIA begin tracking Aileen. After Walker's funeral, Brody attacks Mike over his affair with Jessica. He calls Carrie to a bar that night to socialize; the two get drunk and end up having sex, but not before Carrie reveals the purpose of the polygraph test to Brody. The next day, Brody passes every question on his polygraph, including whether he slipped Hamid the razor. Carrie requests that Brody be asked whether he has ever been unfaithful to his wife; Brody says no, and passes the polygraph. Carrie realizes that Brody is a skilled liar, though Saul believes he is no longer a suspect. Outside the CIA office, Brody has Carrie get in his car, and the two drive off.
7. The Weekend
Carrie and Brody drive to her family's remote cabin and enjoy a day of sex and romance. Aileen attempts to flee to Mexico, but Saul intercepts her and drives her back to Langley. She discloses that her task was to buy a home near the airport and await a visitor, who spent an hour on the roof. The roof is discovered to have a direct line of sight to a landing pad for Marine One, the President's helicopter, within a sniper's range. At the cabin the following morning, Carrie inadvertently indicates to Brody that she has been spying on him, prompting him to confront her. Carrie accuses Brody of being an agent of al-Qaeda; Brody maintains his innocence, but admits that he converted to Islam, that he beat Walker to death under coercion, and that he harbored an affection for Abu Nazir during his captivity. Saul calls Carrie and reports that Aileen has identified the "visitor" at her house as Tom Walker, who is revealed to be both alive as well as the POW turned by al-Qaeda. A shocked Carrie attempts to apologize to Brody, but he rebuffs her and drives away.
8. Achilles Heel
The CIA inform Tom Walker's family (but not Brody) that Walker is still alive. Walker is shown to be homeless in Washington, D.C.; he receives a key and note from Mansour al-Zahrani, a Saudi diplomat. Walker is discovered to be routinely calling his family to hear their voices; the FBI traces the next call between Walker and his wife Helen, but Helen warns him to run. The FBI chases Walker through a mosque where they accidentally kill two attendees; Walker uses his key and note to retrieve a sniper rifle from a storage unit. Carrie visits Brody and reveals that Walker is alive and working for al-Qaeda; that night, Brody attacks al-Zahrani at his home and tells him that he is done talking to Abu Nazir, revealing that he has remained in contact with Nazir despite proclaiming his innocence.
9. Crossfire
In flashbacks to three years ago, Abu Nazir is shown to have ended Brody's torture, given him comfortable living quarters, and placed him in charge of teaching English to Nazir's young son Issa. Over time, Brody developed a fatherly love for Issa, until Issa's school was destroyed by an American drone strike that killed Issa and several other children. Vice President Walden claimed that any images of dead children were terrorist propaganda, enraging Brody. In the present, the CIA identify Mansour al-Zahrani as Walker's handler, but Carrie and Saul are limited in their options given al-Zahrani's diplomatic immunity. Brody is kidnapped by Nazir's men and put on a video call with Nazir himself, who reminds Brody of his commitment to al-Qaeda's mission. Al-Zahrani enters and instructs Brody to accept an offer from Vice President Walden to run for public office.
10. Representative Brody
Vice President Walden offers Brody a chance to run for the House of Representatives in an upcoming special election; Brody accepts. Carrie and Saul interrogate al-Zahrani and arrange for him to meet Walker at Farragut Square the next day. Brody visits Carrie at her home and informs her of his bid for public office, having come to confirm that no one knows of their affair. During the planned meet with al-Zahrani the next day, Walker remotely detonates a bomb inside a briefcase belonging to a lookalike, killing al-Zahrani and several bystanders, and giving Carrie a concussion. Saul visits Carrie at the hospital, and the two conclude that there must be a mole inside the government. At the same time, Brody announces his candidacy on television.
11. The Vest
Saul finds Carrie in a manic, delirious state after a week of recovery in the hospital, and learns from her sister Maggie that she has bipolar disorder. Saul stays with Carrie at her home while her medication takes effect, and helps her produce a detailed timeline of Abu Nazir's activity. Brody takes his family on a trip to Gettysburg, where he secretly meets with an al-Qaeda contact at the back of a clothing store and receives an explosive suicide vest tailored to him. Carrie identifies a period in her timeline when Abu Nazir was inactive (which, unbeknownst to her, coincides with Issa's death). She calls Brody, who offers to come over and discuss it; however, Estes arrives instead, and reveals that Brody disclosed details of their affair and her illegal surveillance of the Brody family. He confiscates Carrie's classified documents and suspends her from the CIA.
12. Marine One
Brody records a video explaining his impending attack on the Vice President. The following day, Walden and other lawmakers convene at the State Department for a policy summit, which Brody attends while wearing the suicide vest. Walker snipes at the crowd and kills three people; Walden, Brody, Estes and others are ushered into a bunker. Carrie realizes that the shooting is a diversion to get the Vice President and other high-value targets in the same room as Brody, who is to carry out the actual attack. Carrie drives to the Brody household and frantically warns Dana about her father's plans. Brody, seconds from detonating the vest, relents upon hearing his daughter's pleas to come home. Brody secretly meets with Walker that night and tells Nazir over the phone that he can now act as al-Qaeda's mole inside the White House. Nazir has Brody kill Walker. Carrie decides to undergo electroconvulsive therapy for her bipolar disorder; right before she is rendered unconscious by her anesthesia, she remembers Brody calling out Issa's name in his sleep at the cabin, and realizes that the two had a connection.
Season 2
1. The Smile
Six months after the first season, tensions rise in the Middle East when Iran vows retaliation for Israel's bombing of their nuclear sites. Carrie, adjusting to life outside the CIA, is asked by Estes and later Saul to extract information from one of her assets in Beirut, who claims to have information on an imminent attack on America. Carrie reluctantly agrees, and successfully evades Lebanese surveillance on her way to meet her contact. Walden approaches Brody as a potential running mate in the former's presidential campaign. Brody accepts, and is later tasked by his new Al-Qaeda handler, White House correspondent Roya Hammad, to retrieve a CIA hitlist from Estes' office. Dana accidentally lets slip at school that her father is a Muslim, leading Jessica to find out herself and confront Brody.
2. Beirut is Back
Carrie travels to Beirut to meet up with her asset, Fatima, who gives her information on Abu Nazir meeting with Fatima's husband, the head of Hezbollah. Saul and Estes doubt Carrie's judgment, but Saul ultimately authorizes a mission to eliminate Nazir. During the meet, Brody – who is present in the situation room observing the operation – covertly tips off Nazir, allowing him to narrowly escape. While transporting Fatima to safety, Carrie breaks protocol by searching Fatima's apartment for her husband's connections, narrowly evading a mob on the way back. Saul discovers a hidden compartment in a bag Carrie retrieved from the apartment, and is stunned to find a memory card containing Brody's recorded confession to his planned suicide attack.
3. State of Independence
Brody learns from Roya that the CIA is onto the tailor in Gettysburg who crafted Brody's suicide vest, and is tasked with transporting the man to a safehouse. Because of the mission, Brody is unable to attend Jessica's planned fundraiser for veterans; Jessica gives a speech in his place, which is well-received. During a stop, the tailor, Bassel, attempts to escape; Brody ultimately kills him during a struggle. Saul returns to the U.S. and shows Carrie the video he obtained of Brody's confession; Carrie realizes her suspicions were correct all along.
4. New Car Smell
Carrie, Saul and Estes set up surveillance of Brody at a CIA safehouse; Estes places analyst Peter Quinn in charge of the operation, and reinstates Carrie to the CIA. Jessica demands that Brody either tell the truth or leave the house; Brody takes the latter option and books a night at a hotel. Under surveillance from Quinn's team, Carrie visits Brody at the hotel bar and has a friendly conversation with him. Pushing to obtain a confession, Carrie disobeys orders and goes up to Brody's room, where she accuses him of being a terrorist and a traitor. As a confrontation is about to ensue, Saul's team breaks into the room and arrests Brody.
5. Q&A
Brody is brought to a safehouse to be interrogated. Quinn questions him first; Brody admits his love for Issa and animosity towards Walden, but denies wearing a suicide vest, leading Quinn to stab him the hand with a knife. Carrie takes over the interrogation, shuts off the cameras, and uses her personal connection with Brody to gradually disarm him. Brody ultimately admits to wearing the vest, reveals that Abu Nazir is planning an attack on the U.S., and gives up the names of his contacts, including Roya. Carrie recruits Brody as the CIA's asset against Nazir. Dana goes on a date with Finn Walden, the vice president's son, but he hits a pedestrian with his car and they flee the scene.
6. A Gettysburg Address
The CIA monitors Roya, who meets with an unknown man while avoiding surveillance. Brody informs the team that the Gettysburg tailor is dead; Carrie and Quinn send a team to the shop to pull the surveillance and investigate it for forensics. However, Nazir's men, led by Roya's contact, ambush the shop, killing several officers and wounding Quinn; they extract a large case from the shop. Brody denies his knowledge of the ambush to Carrie. Mike independently investigates Brody; despite being talked down by the CIA, he learns that Brody killed Walker. Dana visits the hospital to check on the woman she and Finn hit on the road, and learns that she has died of her injuries.
7. The Clearing
Brody admits to Jessica that he killed Walker, characterizing it as a botched CIA mission. Saul visits Aileen Morgan in prison in hopes of identifying Roya's contact; however, the information turns out to be a hoax, and Aileen is found to have committed suicide. Brody attends a political fundraiser hosted by a major donor to Walden's campaign, who endorses Brody as Walden's running mate. Dana admits to her parents that she and Finn were involved in a hit-and-run and decides to report it to the police despite the Waldens' insistence on covering it up; Brody accompanies her, but Carrie forbids him from filing the report, as it would cause tensions between him and Walden and thus jeopardize his relationship with Nazir. Dana runs away.
8. I'll Fly Away
Dana spends the night at Mike's, and the next day visits the family of the woman Finn killed; the eldest daughter, who is being paid off, tells her to drop it and go away. Brody tells Roya he is through and goes into hiding with Carrie, who convinces him to remain committed to helping her; the two have sex while the CIA listens in. The following day, Brody calls Roya to make amends; the two meet at a remote location that night, where they are picked up a helicopter. Brody is taken to meet with Abu Nazir, who is now in the U.S.
9. Two Hats
Brody finally surfaces after 12 hours, revealing that Nazir is in the U.S. and plotting an attack on a military homecoming event hosted by Walden and covered by Roya. Brody's family (along with Mike) is placed under CIA protection; Jessica and Mike rekindle their relationship. Saul investigates Quinn and learns that he in fact reports to black ops specialist Dar Adal, Saul's former colleague. The CIA follows through on Brody's information and successfully foils the terror plot, arresting Roya in the process but failing to capture Nazir. Quinn is revealed to have been ordered by Estes to assassinate Brody had Nazir been caught.
10. Broken Hearts
Abu Nazir kidnaps Carrie and uses her as leverage to force Brody to give him the serial number for Walden's pacemaker. Brody breaks into Walden's office and provides Nazir the number in exchange for Carrie's freedom. One of Nazir's men uses the number to hack into Walden's pacemaker and induce a lethal heart attack, which occurs as Brody tells Walden he is withdrawing his candidacy for Vice President and rebuffs him as he dies. Saul meets with Dar Adal to discuss Quinn's involvement in Estes' operation, and accuses Estes of plotting to assassinate Brody to mask his own complicity in the drone strike that killed Issa. Estes later has Saul detained in an interrogation room. Carrie returns without backup to the abandoned mill where Nazir held her, believing he is still hiding there.
11. In Memoriam
CIA and FBI teams search the mill where Nazir held Carrie, but come up short. Carrie interrogates Roya; though Roya does not cooperate, Carrie senses from her answers that Nazir may indeed be hiding in the mill, and orders a second SWAT search of the premises. They find a hidden room from which Nazir emerges, kills a SWAT officer, and chases down Carrie until he is cornered and commits suicide by cop. Estes orders Quinn to go through with killing Brody in the wake of Nazir's death. Brody and his family are debriefed on Nazir's death and released back home. Brody and Jessica amicably separate; Brody goes to visit Carrie, with Quinn watching them from afar.
12. The Choice
Carrie and Brody spend another night at her weekend cabin, where Carrie realizes she must choose between her relationship with Brody and her career at the CIA. Quinn tracks them, but relents from killing Brody, realizing that it would serve no use but to protect Estes at the cost of Carrie's wellbeing. Saul is released from his detention by Estes and attends Abu Nazir's burial at sea. Carrie and Brody attend Walden's memorial service at Langley, where the two decide to be with one another; however, they notice Brody's car parked outside the building right before a bomb goes off, killing over 200 people including Estes, the Waldens, and several Cabinet members. Al-Qaeda takes responsibility for the attack and releases Brody's confession video to the public, framing him as the culprit. Saul arrives at the scene of the bombing and learns he has been named Acting Director due to Estes' death. Carrie procures fake passports for herself and Brody and helps him escape across the Canadian border, vowing to clear his name. She decides not to run away with him and instead returns to Langley, where she reunites with Saul.
Season 3
1. Tin Man is Down
Fifty-eight days after the bombing of the CIA headquarters, Carrie is called to testify before a congressional committee. Dana is released from a hospital following a suicide attempt. Saul's wife, Mira, is now in the U.S., having returned to stay with him after the Langley attack. The CIA coordinates six simultaneous operations across the world to kill the people responsible for planning the CIA bombing; Saul's ultimate goal is to capture Majid Javadi, the Iranian intelligence official who financed the attack, but his whereabouts are unknown. A leak emerges in the news regarding an unnamed CIA officer having a sexual relationship with Brody; Saul testifies before the Intelligence Committee, where he does not provide Carrie's name but does disclose her bipolar disorder.
2. Uh... Oh... Ah...
After Saul outs Carrie as bipolar to Congress, Carrie attempts to get her side of the story to the press. However, Dar Adal intervenes and has her committed to a psychiatric institution. Dana sneaks out of her house to continue her relationship with Leo, a boy she met in therapy. Saul brings in Fara Sherazi, a young Iranian-American financial analyst, to investigate ties between HLBC bank and the Langley attack; the bank's managers are initially uncooperative but eventually turn over their records after Quinn threatens the CEO. Saul and Fara find past transactions from the Iranian government to Abu Nazir's network.
3. Tower of David
Brody resurfaces in Caracas, where he is found with two bullet wounds. He is taken to the " Tower of David ", an unfinished skyscraper now serving as a slum, and treated by a group of mercenaries who are aware of his identity and have CIA contacts. Brody is forbidden from leaving the tower, but soon escapes to a nearby mosque where he attempts to seek refuge. However, the imam recognizes him and calls the police; the mercenaries intervene, killing the police officers as well as the imam and his wife. They confine Brody to a cell, where he begins developing a heroin addiction. Carrie is met by Paul Franklin, a mysterious legal associate who offers to get her released from the psych ward if she speaks with a partner at his firm. Carrie refuses, believing that the firm is trying to turn her against the CIA.
4. Game On
Dana and Leo run away together. Fara and Saul trace the money behind the Langley bombing to an Iranian cover identity belonging to Majid Javadi. Carrie is released from the psych ward, prompting Saul to freeze her bank account, impound her car, and put her under surveillance. Franklin meets her in her home, naming his firm responsible for her release. He introduces her to his client, Leland Bennett, a lawyer for a bank with ties to Iranian terrorists including those who carried out the Langley attack. Carrie tentatively agrees to give Bennett insider information about the CIA in exchange for protection against the agency's reprisals against her. She then visits Saul, where it is revealed that her entire breakdown and hospitalization were an elaborate ruse to convince Iran she could be turned, thus allowing her to infiltrate the terrorist network.
5. The Yoga Play
Saul recruits Quinn to his and Carrie's mission and places him in charge of watching over her. Dana learns from news reports on her disappearance that Leo is a suspect in his brother's death; she confronts Leo, who admits that his brother died while the two played Russian Roulette at his suggestion. Dana rebuffs Leo, turns herself in, and returns home. At a hunting retreat where Saul is expecting to be named CIA Director, he is nonplussed when Senator Andrew Lockhart, a staunch critic of the CIA's practices, is given the nomination instead. He returns home to find Mira having dinner with a former colleague. Men break into Carrie's apartment and take her to meet with Majid Javadi, who has arrived in the U.S.
6. Still Positive
Javadi attempts to interrogate Carrie, but she reveals her ruse and blackmails him with knowledge of his embezzlement of government funds, which would make him an enemy of the state in Iran. Javadi agrees to meet with Saul and is placed under surveillance. Carrie is revealed to be secretly pregnant. Dana adopts her mother's maiden name and moves out of the house. Saul informs Fara of his past with Javadi; the two were allies during the Iranian Revolution in 1979, but when Javadi betrayed Saul by sending four of his assets to their deaths, Saul took revenge by helping Javadi's wife and child flee to the U.S. On his way to meet Saul, Javadi takes a detour to the house belonging to his ex-wife and daughter-in-law, and brutally murders them both before allowing himself to be captured by Carrie and Quinn, who were unable to intercept him on time. Javadi is brought to a CIA safehouse, where Saul punches him in the face.
7. Gerontion
Saul reveals to Javadi that he plans to send him back to Iran as a CIA asset; Javadi protests, but relents when he realizes his only alternative is to return home as a traitor. Before leaving, he confirms to Saul that Brody was not responsible for the Langley attack. The police investigate the murder scene of Javadi's ex-wife and daughter-in-law; Quinn, in no danger of prosecution, falsely confesses to the killings to protect the Javadi operation. Saul briefs Dar Adal and Senator Lockhart on his plans with Javadi; Lockhart attempts to halt the operation, wanting to prosecute Javadi in the U.S., but Saul and Dar lock him in a conference room. Carrie escorts Javadi to his plane back to Iran; before he boards, he informs her that the real Langley bomber is still at large and that Leland Bennett knows his identity.
8. A Red Wheelbarrow
Saul tells the White House Chief of Staff that his plan is to have Javadi move up the chain of command in Iran's intelligence network in hopes of ushering regime change. Carrie, now 13 weeks pregnant, takes a sonogram. The CIA initiate a plan to flush out the Langley bomber, having Carrie feed Franklin false information that the bomber has been identified and linked to Bennett. Upon hearing this, Bennett orders Franklin to exfiltrate the bomber out of the U.S. The CIA track Franklin to his planned meeting with the bomber; Carrie realizes Franklin is about to kill the bomber and attempts to stop the operation, knowing she needs the bomber alive to clear Brody's name. Dar Adal orders her to stop; when Carrie refuses, Quinn shoots her in the arm, while Franklin kills the bomber. Saul arrives in Caracas and pays $10 million for Brody's release; he discovers a catatonic Brody surrounded by heroin needles.
9. One Last Thing
Saul and Dar Adal oversee Brody's agonizing heroin withdrawal; Brody is given ibogaine on Dar's recommendation to speed up the process, leading to a series of violent hallucinations. Saul tells Carrie his plan to have Brody seek political asylum in Iran, enabling him to assassinate Danesh Akbari – the leader of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard – which would allow Javadi to inherit the position and advance American interests in the Middle East. Carrie visits a recovering Brody and convinces him to agree to the mission; over sixteen days, a team of special ops soldiers train Brody back to peak physical condition. Carrie takes Brody to see Dana shortly before his departure; Dana, now working as a maid at a hotel, rebuffs Brody and asks to never see him again. Brody bids farewell to Carrie and departs for Iran with his team.
10. Good Night
Brody and his special ops team are taken to Kurdish-controlled territory near the Iran-Iraq border. During the journey that night, they are confronted by three Kurdish police officers whom they are forced to kill. En route to the border, the team's car hits a landmine, dismembering the team leader's leg and attracting the attention of the Kurdish Peshmerga forces, who open fire on the group. Saul aborts the mission and hands it over to the JSOC commander, who orders the team to withdraw, but Brody refuses and makes a run for the border with the aid of one of the team's members. The two are captured by the Iranian army. Brody requests asylum, and the Iranians take the two men to a holding cell; Javadi enters the cell and shoots Brody's companion in the head before taking Brody to Tehran.
11. Big Man in Tehran
Saul convinces Mossad to help them with their mission in Iran. Carrie goes to Iran posing as a Swiss tourist and uses the home of Fara's uncle as a safehouse. Javadi reports to Akbari, his superior, that Brody has propaganda value for Iran, and suggests a face-to-face. Brody is given a cyanide needle Carrie acquired from Mossad for him to use on Akbari. However, Akbari abruptly leaves their planned rendezvous and has Brody taken to the home of Abu Nazir's widow to be vetted. Over the next six days, Brody makes appearances on Iranian television denouncing the U.S.; Lockhart and Dar Adal, having lost faith in Brody, convince Saul to have him eliminated in order to protect Javadi. Carrie, realizing the plan, alerts Brody and helps him escape. Brody arranges for a personal meeting with Akbari, where he reveals his and Javadi's roles in the CIA operation, only to kill Akbari immediately afterwards. He calls Carrie and asks to be extracted from Iran.
12. The Star
Brody leaves Akbari's body in his office and escapes the building, then meets up with Carrie to go to a safehouse, where Carrie reveals that she is pregnant with his child. Saul attempts to have them extracted, but Lockhart discloses Brody's location to Javadi, whose men capture and imprison Brody. Javadi informs Carrie that Brody has been sentenced to a public hanging; Carrie calls Brody, who implores her not to attend, but Carrie goes regardless and watches helplessly as Brody dies. Four months later, Iran offers the IAEA access to its nuclear sites in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. Saul joins the private sector, having been fired from the CIA by Lockhart. Lockhart promotes Carrie to station chief in Istanbul. She requests that Brody be given a star at an upcoming memorial for CIA members having lost their lives on the job, but Lockhart refuses. After the ceremony, Carrie, who has by now delivered her baby, uses a marker to draw a star on the wall in Brody's memory.
Season 4
1. The Drone Queen
Carrie, now operating as the CIA station chief in Kabul, authorizes an airstrike on a farmhouse in Pakistan believed to be the whereabouts of Taliban leader Haissam Haqqani. However, reports soon emerge that the airstrike occurred during a wedding, killing Haqqani and 40 other people. Among those killed were the family of medical student Aayan Ibrahim, who survived the airstrike and has a video of the wedding he was filming on his mobile phone at the moment of the strike. One of Aayan's friends uploads the video online against his wishes, creating a rift between the United States government and the Pakistan Armed Forces. Carrie travels to the Islamabad embassy to meet with its station chief, Sandy Bachman. Before Carrie arrives, Sandy leaves the embassy without protection to meet with the secret source of his intelligence on Haqqani. At the same time, Sandy's identity is leaked to the Pakistani press and his face is shown on the television news. Carrie and Quinn attempt to pick Sandy up, but a violent mob surrounds their vehicle and beats Sandy to death. Carrie and Quinn narrowly escape.
2. Trylon and Perisphere
Carrie and Quinn return to Washington; Lockhart recalls Carrie from her posting in Afghanistan as punishment for the botched airstrike. Carrie struggles to form a bond with her infant daughter Franny, who has been under the care of Carrie's sister Maggie in her absence. Quinn, meanwhile, lapses into alcoholism while coping with the events in Islamabad, for which he feels responsible. He has a sexual encounter with his landlady and is later arrested for beating two men at a restaurant. When Carrie bails him out, he gives her the name of Jordan Harris, a former Islamabad case officer who was removed from his posting despite an exemplary record. Carrie tracks down Harris and learns that Lockhart had him transferred out of Islamabad after Harris reported that Sandy was buying information using state secrets. Carrie uses this information to leverage Lockhart into placing her in charge of the Islamabad station, taking over for Sandy.
3. Shalwar Kameez
Carrie arrives in Islamabad as the new station chief and learns that the embassy has been placed on lockdown at the order of the U.S. ambassador, Martha Boyd. However, Carrie has set up an alternate base of operations with Fara and Max, aiming to establish contact with Aayan (who has been threatened to keep him from talking to the media). After Aayan refuses to speak with Fara, posing as a journalist, Carrie makes contact herself, saying she is Fara's boss, and offers Aayan protection as well as safe passage to London where he can continue his medical studies. Saul arrives in Islamabad with a security team from his company to back Carrie up; while there, he meets with Martha, who is an old friend and colleague, and offers Carrie further assistance. Meanwhile, Quinn submits his resignation to the CIA, but faces pressure to stay from Dar Adal, who goads Quinn with his failure to protect Sandy. While watching video footage of the mob's murder of Sandy, Quinn discovers evidence that the attack was premeditated and reports this to Carrie, who implores him to return to Pakistan. Quinn reluctantly agrees.
4. Iron in the Fire
Aayan is told that he is being expelled from his university for stealing medicine. With nowhere else to go, he accepts Carrie's offer. Carrie receives confirmation from Aayan that the man who threatened him was ISI operative Farhad Ghazi, the same man Quinn identified as having coordinated the attack that led to Sandy's death. Carrie and her team begin surveillance on Ghazi, but he escapes. Dennis Boyd, the ambassador's husband, is approached by ISI agent Tasneem Qureishi, who has learned that Dennis was Sandy's secret source of U.S. intel. She uses this to blackmail him into becoming her informant. Fara follows Aayan and discovers that Haqqani – his uncle – is alive, not having died in the airstrike, and is receiving deliveries of medicine from Aayan. Carrie realizes that she can use Aayan to get to Haqqani. She installs Aayan at a safehouse, claiming that they must wait several days for his passport and visa, a ploy which buys her time to interrogate him and earn his trust. As part of her recruiting strategy, Carrie seduces Aayan.
5. About a Boy
Carrie interviews Aayan about his relationship with Haqqani, his uncle, but he panics when she broaches the rumor that Haqqani may be alive. On his way back to the United States, Saul spots Farhad Ghazi at the airport and calls Quinn to tell him that Ghazi is waiting for a flight to Johannesburg. Ghazi then gets out of the line and has two of his men kidnap Saul before revealing that he is working for Tasneem. Fara and Quinn, after failing to reach Carrie for assistance, follow a cleric who was seen with Haqqani, but are unable to proceed past a checkpoint, unaware that Saul is being transported in the trunk of the cleric's car. Dennis enters Carrie's quarters in the embassy seeking information about her. Quinn confronts Carrie over her having abandoned the mission to focus on recruiting Aayan, and accuses her of sexually exploiting the boy. Aayan confides in Carrie that Haqqani is alive.
6. From A to B and Back Again
Carrie gives Aayan his new passport and rehearses him on the details of his identity. He and Carrie are attacked by several men at the safehouse, but Aayan is able to escape. The break-in is revealed to be a ruse engineered by Carrie to prompt Aayan to seek refuge with Haqqani. Dennis tracks down the safehouse and gives Tasneem evidence of Carrie's bipolar disorder, also reporting that Carrie has procured a new identity for Aayan. Quinn learns that Ghazi did not leave Islamabad and that Saul is unreachable. Carrie and deputy station chief John Redmond, together with Max, use a GPS tracker in Aayan's passport to monitor him as he travels to a rendezvous with Haqqani, following him with a CIA drone. However, Haqqani emerges with a captured Saul, aware that he is under watch, and executes Aayan for leading him into a trap. An enraged Carrie orders a drone strike even with Saul present at the site, but Quinn talks her down, allowing Haqqani and his men to leave with Saul in tow.
7. Redux
News of Saul's capture reaches the United States, prompting Lockhart to travel to Islamabad. With Saul's presence protecting him from an airstrike, Haqqani holds Saul captive at a compound near the Afghanistan border, where he plots to negotiate Saul's release in exchange for several prisoners. Dennis breaks into Carrie's apartment using a key given to him by Tasneem, and replaces her medication with a hallucinogenic substance. Carrie unwittingly takes the replacement drugs and begins suffering increasingly severe paranoid delusions while following one of Aayan's contacts. Carrie is soon taken off the streets by the police and delivered to a house where she has a vision of Nicholas Brody. Carrie breaks down crying in his arms, unaware that it is a hallucination and that she is actually in the presence of ISI colonel Aasar Khan.
8. Halfway to a Donut
Carrie awakens in Khan's house with no memory of how she got there. Tasneem tells Khan that the ISI was trying to have Carrie removed from Islamabad and that his intervention foiled their plan. Carrie surmises that her meds were tampered with, but Khan denies being involved. Over live video, Haqqani presents a captured Saul to the U.S. embassy and names the prisoners he wants released, but Saul begs the U.S. to refuse Haqqani's demands. Saul then escapes and is guided by Carrie and Quinn to a nearby CIA refuge. During a meeting between the U.S. embassy and the ISI about the prisoner exchange, Carrie realizes that the Pakistanis must already have Saul's location. Unable to extract Saul, Carrie reluctantly directs him back into the hands of the Taliban, refusing his wish to die rather than be recaptured. Lockhart decides that the U.S. will accept Haqqani's terms for the exchange. That night, Khan informs Carrie that Dennis Boyd is the ISI's mole in the embassy.
9. There's Something Else Going On
Carrie has Dennis detained at the embassy with Martha's help. During the prisoner exchange, the Taliban use a young boy wearing a suicide vest as leverage to ensure the release of the five prisoners. Saul refuses to move, hoping to prevent the exchange from succeeding, but Carrie convinces him to get up. However, their convoy is struck by two RPGs on the way back to the embassy, prompting Lockhart to send the embassy's security forces to the scene. Dennis realizes that the security personnel are being diverted from an incoming attack on the embassy, and admits to Martha that he told Tasneem of the embassy's hidden underground entrance. As they speak, Haqqani and a troupe of armed men use the tunnel to enter the embassy.
10. 13 Hours in Islamabad
Carrie and Saul survive the assault on their convoy, but they and the troops sent to retrieve them are tied down by sniper fire. Haqqani and his men storm the embassy, slaughtering numerous employees. Lockhart, with a list of the CIA's assets in Pakistan, joins Martha, Dennis and a number of staff members in a secure room. Outside the door, Haqqani begins killing off survivors of the attack one by one, saying he will continue doing so until the list is handed over. When he gets to Fara and threatens to slit her throat, Lockhart relents and gives him the list, but Haqqani executes her nonetheless; Quinn and a Marine with him start shooting at Haqqani and his men, but a wounded Haqqani escapes with the list. The White House breaks off diplomatic relations with Pakistan and prepares to evacuate the remaining embassy staff; Quinn, however, goes rogue and kidnaps Farhad Ghazi in hopes of locating Haqqani. Lockhart gives Carrie permission to stay in Islamabad for five more days to find Quinn.
11. Krieg Nicht Lieb
Quinn visits his former lover Astrid, a German intelligence officer stationed in Islamabad, and receives her help in locating Haqqani. While searching for Quinn, Carrie is devastated to learn from her sister that their father has died of a stroke. Quinn has Aayan's ex-girlfriend upload a video of Aayan's execution to the internet, intending to prompt public protests and draw Haqqani out of hiding, and he assembles a bomb he plans to detonate during the demonstration. Tasneem sends a group of pro-Haqqani counter-protesters to the demonstration. Carrie prevents Quinn from detonating the bomb, but moves in to kill Haqqani herself when he shows himself to greet his supporters. However, Khan prevents her from shooting Haqqani, alerting her to Dar Adal's presence in Haqqani's vehicle.
12. Long Time Coming
Dar Adal informs Saul that he made a deal with Haqqani, who agreed not to harbor terrorists in Afghanistan in exchange for being removed from the CIA's kill list. Dar assures Saul that the video evidence of his capture by Haqqani will not be publicized, preserving Saul's chances of becoming CIA director. Carrie returns home from Islamabad for her father's funeral. She and Quinn reunite and share a kiss later that night; Quinn suggests to Carrie that they leave the CIA together, but Carrie believes she is incapable of upholding a relationship. Carrie tracks down her estranged mother, who apologizes for abandoning her family and assures Carrie that her bipolar disorder does not prevent her from having a healthy relationship. Carrie attempts to call Quinn, but he has already accepted a high-risk mission in Syria with Dar's group, believing Carrie turned him down. Carrie visits Dar Adal and confronts him over his dealings with Haqqani, claiming that Saul would never approve; however, she is dismayed to find Saul already at Dar's house, and realizes that he in fact agreed to the deal.
Season 5
1. Separation Anxiety
Two years after the events of season 4, Carrie has left the CIA and works as a security consultant for the Düring Foundation in Berlin, where she lives with her daughter Franny and her boyfriend Jonas, the foundation's legal counsel. The foundation's head, Otto Düring, makes plans to travel to a Syrian refugee camp in Beirut to secure relief funds, against Carrie's warnings. Carrie secures safe passage to the camp for Otto after requesting help from a Hezbollah commander. Two hackers in Berlin obtain classified CIA documents revealing that the CIA and the German intelligence agency, the BND, are illegally spying on German citizens for counterterrorism purposes; they leak one of the documents to Laura Sutton, a journalist at the Düring Foundation. Saul, who has fallen out with Carrie after she derailed his bid for CIA Director, arrives in Berlin, where the BND orders him and Berlin station chief Allison Carr to end the surveillance program immediately. Saul independently continues the program, enlisting Quinn to assassinate confirmed targets.
2. The Tradition of Hospitality
After an attack in the refugee camp is foiled, Carrie and Otto are almost killed by an IED explosion while fleeing the scene. Carrie stays in Beirut to find out who was behind the attack and is told that she was the target, not Otto. Laura goes public with the leaked document revealing the CIA's illegal surveillance program. She is detained by the BND until Jonas obtains her release. After a meeting with the BND regarding the leak, Saul informs Allison that at the request of the German government she is being recalled from her position as station chief, but Allison reaches out to Dar Adal in an attempt to have Saul recalled instead. Quinn receives the name of his next assigned kill: Carrie Mathison.
3. Super Powers
Carrie sends her daughter to the U.S. for safety and takes refuge in a secluded cabin with Jonas while trying to find out who is after her. She decides to temporarily go off her medication, feeling her intellect is sharper without it. Saul confronts Allison over her attempt to get him recalled, and informs her he has negotiated with the BND to allow both of them to keep their postings in Berlin; the two are later shown to be in a sexual relationship. Numan, one of the hackers who leaked the classified documents, contacts Laura to give her the remainder, but is unaware that his partner Korzenik has stolen them and plans to sell them to Russian intelligence. Quinn kidnaps Jonas's son to draw Jonas away from Carrie; he arrives at the cabin that night and incapacitates Carrie.
4. Why is This Night Different?
Quinn holds Carrie in a warehouse and informs her of his orders to kill her; they take photos staging her death. She and Quinn scout the post office where Quinn receives his assignments to confirm whether it was Saul who gave the kill order; Quinn is ambushed by a hitman, who wounds him before being killed in a gunfight. Korzenik, expecting to sell the CIA documents to a Russian diplomat, is instead taken to meet with SVR agent Ivan Krupin, who tortures Korzenik to get the location of additional copies of the documents before killing him. Saul and Allison lure General Youssef of Syria to Switzerland and try to persuade him to take over for president Bashar al-Assad after a planned coup. Youssef boards a plane to return to Syria. Carrie calls the only contact number on the hitman's phone, and Allison answers in Russian; Youssef's plane explodes seconds later.
5. Better Call Saul
Allison is revealed to be working for Ivan, who shows her Quinn's staged photo "confirming" Carrie's death. Allison suggests to her superiors that Israel is behind the bombing of General Youssef's plane; she manipulates Saul into suspecting Etai Luskin, his friend who is Israel's ambassador to Germany, while leading Dar Adal to suspect Saul and Etai conspired in the attack. Dar orders surveillance on Saul. Carrie learns from Astrid, who works for the BND, that the hitman who shot Quinn works for the SVR. She realizes that she needs to see the leaked documents, but Laura tells her the Russians have them, meaning the only way she can get them is from the CIA. Quinn's condition worsens; Jonas, who is with him, calls for an ambulance, but Quinn flees. Quinn attempts to kill himself, but is stopped by a passerby before falling unconscious.
6. Parabiosis
Quinn is nursed to health by Hussein, the passerby, an Iraqi doctor who is not licensed to practice medicine in Germany but instead manages a building in which a group of Syrian jihadists reside. Quinn convinces most of the jihadists he is a mercenary, not a spy, but is forced to kill their leader in self-defense. Carrie tells Saul about her theory that the Russians want her dead, adding that she needs to see the leaked documents; Saul refuses to believe her, but becomes suspicious when he realizes he is being followed. He learns from Allison that Dar Adal ordered the surveillance. Jonas tells Carrie that Quinn escaped, and he leaves her when she refuses to go home with him. Carrie goes to Otto and requests a private plane to help her disappear. Saul covertly makes copies of the leaked documents and gives them to Otto before being detained by the CIA; Otto gives the documents to Carrie.
7. Oriole
Carrie reviews the documents and finds one indicating that one of her Iraqi informants tried to contact her and refused to speak to anyone but her. She calls the informant, who reports that he saw corrupt Iraqi lawyer Ahmed Nazari resurface after being presumed dead. Carrie tracks Nazari down to Amsterdam. Saul admits to Allison that he delivered his copy of the leaked documents to Carrie; Allison reports this to Ivan. While searching Nazari's house, Carrie sees one of Ivan's men remove something from his safe and narrowly escapes after being discovered. She calls Allison and requests a meet. Dar Adal orders that Saul be taken back to Langley, but Etai has his men extract Saul. Quinn learns that Bibi, now the jihadists' leader, is the nephew of a high-priority CIA kill target; seeing an opportunity, he agrees to guide the jihadists to the Syrian border after receiving Dar Adal's authorization.
8. All About Allison
In flashbacks to 2005, Carrie arrives in Baghdad to replace Allison as a case officer. Allison introduces Carrie to Nazari, who is one of Allison's assets. Nazari turns out to be working for Ivan, who blackmails Allison into becoming a double agent for the SVR in exchange for millions of dollars Nazari has stolen from the Iraqi government and information that will help her rise through the ranks of the CIA. In the present, Etai helps Saul escape to a secure location after Mossad and the CIA reach a deal for Saul's return. In Kosovo, after restraining Quinn, the jihadists load ingredients for chemical weapons onto a truck and head back to Berlin. Carrie meets with Allison and asks her to review her reports on Nazari to determine whether he might have been a double agent. Numan hacks into Nazari's computer for Carrie, and Carrie sees a photo of Nazari taken at a beachside bar in St. Lucia that she recalls Allison mentioning in 2005; she realizes that Allison is working with the SVR.
9. The Litvinov Ruse
Carrie and Saul enlist the BND to help them prove Allison is working for the SVR. Saul plants a bug in Allison's handbag while she is asleep. The BND tell Allison a top Russian agent plans to defect to Germany, triggering Allison to go to a Russian safehouse to meet with Ivan while under BND drone surveillance. Allison and Ivan are arrested, but Allison insists to Dar Adal that Ivan was her asset and not vice versa. Quinn is held captive by the jihadists, who are planning a sarin gas attack on Berlin. He attempts to convince Qasim, a young and inexperienced member of the group, to prevent the attack. Quinn is brought to a gas chamber where his death is to be filmed as a demonstration; Qasim covertly injects him with atropine, an antidote, shortly before he is placed inside. The gas is released, and Quinn begins convulsing.
10. New Normal
Ivan admits it was the SVR that engineered the bombing of General Youssef's plane. Dar Adal demands further evidence of Allison's guilt and elects to resolve the situation quietly in order to avoid a political scandal. Bibi releases a video demanding that the UN recognize the Islamic State within 24 hours or a chemical attack will be unleashed on a European city; footage of Quinn suffering the effects of the sarin gas is included to legitimize the threat. Carrie and Astrid scan the video for clues as to where it was filmed. Bibi executes a member of his group as punishment for saving Quinn's life, aware that Qasim – his cousin – was responsible, but unwilling to kill a family member. The BND arrest Faisal Marwan, a suspected jihadist, after the Düring Foundation learns he may have information about an attack on Berlin. While searching one of several possible locations of Bibi's hideout, Carrie and Astrid find Quinn alive and take him to a hospital, where he is placed in intensive care.
11. Our Man in Damascus
Carrie and Saul convince the doctors to revive Quinn to find out what he knows about the impending terrorist attack, but he goes into respiratory arrest and is placed back in a coma. Saul attempts to get information from Faisal; Laura goes on air and threatens to leak the remaining CIA documents unless Faisal is released, but Faisal commits suicide when left alone. Allison receives her final assignment from the SVR: to ensure the chemical attack succeeds. She tracks down the professor who designed the jihadists' sarin chamber and, after he tells her the time and location of the attack, kills both him and her CIA escort before shooting herself. She then tells the BND the professor said the attack will occur at Berlin Brandenburg Airport, but Carrie finds clues in Qasim's apartment suggesting the target is actually the Hauptbahnhof train station. She spots Qasim at the station and pursues him alone, texting Saul that Allison misled them; Saul receives the text and finds that Allison has escaped from her hospital room.
12. A False Glimmer
In a subway tunnel, Carrie convinces Qasim to try to stop the attack, but Bibi shoots Qasim, at which point Carrie intervenes, shooting Bibi dead to prevent him from detonating the device. In exchange for being given witness protection in the U.S., Ivan tells Saul how the SVR plans to extract Allison; Saul and his team intercept a car carrying her out of Germany and kill everyone in it. Numan is arrested by the BND; by threatening to have him deported to Turkey, where he would be killed, Astrid coerces Laura into making a public statement denouncing Faisal as a terrorist, thereby avoiding another scandal for the BND. Carrie attempts to rekindle her relationship with Jonas, but he declines out of concern for his family's safety. Saul attempts to convince Carrie to rejoin the CIA, but she rebuffs him. Quinn suffers a possibly fatal brain hemorrhage. Dar Adal gives Carrie a letter Quinn wrote her, in which he expressed his love for her, before departing for Syria. Carrie continues watching over him in the hospital.
Season 6
1. Fair Game
Three months after the events of season 5, Carrie is living in New York City, helping run a nonprofit defending the civil liberties of American Muslims. Her latest client is Sekou Bah, a young Muslim man arrested by the FBI for possible terrorist ties after posting a series of online videos sympathizing with Al-Qaeda. Carrie additionally looks after Quinn, who is recovering from his stroke at a veterans' hospital. After Quinn leaves the hospital to indulge in drugs with prostitutes and gets his gun and veterans' check stolen from him, Carrie provides him shelter in her home. Saul and Dar Adal advise President-elect Elizabeth Keane on the state of the CIA. Dar, concerned that Keane may demilitarize the CIA due to her son's death while serving in Iraq, covertly plots with his cabal of senior government officials to undermine Keane.
2. The Man in the Basement
The FBI find $5,000 under Sekou's mattress, which Sekou claims was loaned to him by his friend Saad for a family trip to Nigeria. Carrie and Max learn that Saad is an FBI informant; Carrie defies a court order and confronts Saad herself, learning he was instructed by the FBI to give Sekou the money despite his belief in Sekou's innocence. Dar reports to President-elect Keane's chief of staff that Iran may be working with North Korea to develop a clandestine nuclear program, and that Israel wants the Americans' help to apprehend Iran's liaison with the North Koreans in Abu Dhabi. Carrie, who is secretly advising Keane, suggests that Saul be the one to represent the U.S. during the mission. Quinn suffers a seizure while shopping; he has Carrie show him the video footage of his exposure to sarin gas, telling her he has no memory of the incident. He asks her why she saved his life; she leaves without answering.
3. The Covenant
Sekou's plea deal is revoked because of Carrie's meeting with Saad. Carrie reaches out to a former NSA contact to obtain a recording proving that FBI agent Ray Conlin attempted to entrap Sekou on false charges, and uses it to blackmail Conlin into releasing Sekou. Saul arrives in Abu Dhabi to interrogate Farhad Nafisi, an Iranian banker, about a large transfer of funds made from a covert account. Nafisi denies any involvement with North Korea; Saul is unable to prove he is lying and is forced to release him. Dar nonetheless reports to Keane that the U.S. has "conclusive" evidence of Iran's parallel nuclear program; he later eavesdrops on a meeting between Keane and Carrie, who casts doubt on Dar's report. Saul visits his sister in the West Bank and has an unknown contact pick him up at night. Quinn reclaims his gun from the drug dealer who robbed him and lurks outside Carrie's apartment armed with it, believing that someone may be spying on them.
4. A Flash of Light
Saul covertly meets with Majid Javadi – still the chief of the IRGC – in the West Bank, and asks him to investigate Nafisi's possible involvement with North Korea. The following day, Saul is detained by Etai Luskin, now working for Mossad, who wants details on the meeting. Keane heeds Carrie's advice and decides not to take immediate action against Iran; Dar retaliates by planting a news story criticizing Keane. Keane asks Carrie for information about Dar that can be used to keep him in line; she reminds Carrie that what is at stake is the implementation of Carrie's ideas on reforming the CIA. Dar later attempts to talk Carrie out of advising Keane. Quinn follows a man living across from Carrie's home and watches him arrive at a warehouse. The following morning, Sekou goes to the same warehouse, where he works, and leaves to make a routine delivery; as he drives into Manhattan, a bomb planted in his van explodes. Saul is freed to return to the U.S. in the wake of the attack.
5. Casus Belli
Sekou is publicly identified as a suspect in the bombing and Carrie has to rush to help his family; she leaves Quinn to look after Franny until Latisha, her nanny, arrives. She learns that the recording of Conlin and Saad did not come from her NSA source, but does not know who gave it to her. Carrie is outed as Sekou's defender, which leads to a hostile mob of protesters gathering outside her apartment. When protesters start throwing rocks, an agitated Quinn shoots one of them; he then tells Latisha and Franny to hide in a bathroom. The NYPD surrounds the building and sends in an ESU unit, but Quinn takes an officer hostage, forcing them to abort the operation. Carrie returns home and attempts to talk Quinn down; he claims to have proof she is being spied on. An ESU team storms the apartment and arrests him. Carrie later finds his phone, containing photos of the man across the street, Porteous Belli, and those he took while tailing Belli, and she then sees someone watching her from there.
6. The Return
Carrie shows Quinn's photos to Conlin, who has Saad confirm that Belli was not Sekou's accomplice. Conlin tracks down the vehicle in the photos to a mysterious private corporation that hires formal federal employees to manage large amounts of sensitive data. He calls Carrie to his home to discuss his findings, but when Carrie arrives, she finds that Conlin was just killed by Belli, from whom she narrowly escapes. After seeing the president on TV in New York, Keane, who has been kept incommunicado, supposedly for her safety, since the bombing, unable to contact even her chief of staff, breaks away from her security detail and returns to the city with them in pursuit. Saul learns that Dar is hiding something from him about the work of a Mossad agent. Quinn, who has been committed to a psychiatric institution, is extracted from his ward at night by Astrid.
7. Imminent Risk
Carrie is told that Franny has been placed in the care of child protective services, who deem Carrie an imminent risk to her daughter following the situation at her home. Carrie loses in a court hearing, and Franny is put in foster care. Quinn wakes up in a cabin with Astrid, who informs him that Dar secured his release. Dar visits him and reveals that Carrie chose to have him revived from his coma, likely causing his stroke. Javadi arrives in New York; he informs Saul that Farhad Nafisi, who is now dead, was a longtime Mossad asset. Assuming that Dar is working with Mossad, Saul asks Javadi to confirm to Keane that Iran is not running a parallel nuclear program. Dar is revealed to have hired Belli, as well as to have reported Carrie to child services.
8. Alt.Truth
Saul has Carrie facilitate a meeting between Javadi and Keane. However, Javadi changes his story, telling Keane that Iran is in fact violating the nuclear agreement; he later explains to an indignant Saul that he made a deal with Dar out of self-preservation. Keane says to Carrie that she regrets ever having listened to her. It is revealed that right-wing provocateur Brett O'Keefe is working for Dar and is preparing an edited video slandering Keane's late son as a false war hero. While Astrid is out of the cabin, Quinn empties the bullets out of her gun. He spots Belli at a supermarket, but when, after an argument in which he strikes Astrid, he tries to track Belli down on his own, he ends up attacking a stranger by mistake. On returning to the cabin, he attempts to reconcile with Astrid, telling her he needs her help. In the dark, Belli starts shooting at them, wounding Quinn and killing Astrid when she tries to defend them using the empty gun. Quinn escapes by jumping in the lake and staying underwater until Belli leaves.
9. Sock Puppets
Dar betrays Javadi to Mossad; Javadi covertly calls Carrie to allow her to trace his location, but he is extracted before she and Saul arrive. Carrie finds Javadi's phone, which contains footage of Nafisi confessing his allegiance to Mossad. Carrie and Saul present the footage to Keane as evidence that Dar is behind the conspiracy to mislead her about Iran. Keane involves the current solicitor general, whom she intends to appoint as attorney general in her administration; he advises Carrie to testify that Dar covered up the Russian infiltration of the CIA's Berlin station, which would be a ground for prosecuting him. Carrie, aware that her doing so would disgrace Saul, says she has to speak with him first. Max goes to work undercover at the private company Conlin was investigating, and learns that it is a massive troll farm run by O'Keefe. Quinn ambushes Dar at his home and is told Dar did not order the hit on him and Astrid, but he hears Dar then call Belli to remonstrate with him; Belli tells Dar that someone else ordered the hit. Quinn is able to trace the call to Belli's location.
10. The Flag House
Quinn tracks Belli to a house used to plan black ops missions, including ones Quinn was part of; he finds Sekou's van parked in the garage. Carrie prepares to make her deposition, but learns that a scheduled appointment to see Franny has been cancelled. Realizing Dar is blackmailing her, Carrie opts out of making her statement, after which she is allowed to see Franny. After being rebuffed by Keane, Dar tells O'Keefe to release the video against Keane's son. Max covertly records a video of Dar meeting with O'Keefe and sends it to Carrie, after which he is accosted by O'Keefe's security team. Saul prepares to go into hiding, but Mira talks him out of it; he goes to Carrie's house and, although she is not there, he sees the video Max sent her. Carrie is taken to see Quinn, who has secured a vantage point to watch the black ops house through a rifle sight; he shows her that Belli is in the house.
11. R is for Romeo
Saul shows Max's video to Keane to convince her that Dar has been working with O'Keefe to defame her son. O'Keefe publicly invites Keane to appear on his show, which she accepts on Saul's recommendation. On a live broadcast, she accuses O'Keefe of spreading disinformation and exposes the fact that his social media firm is government-funded. Dar enlists Max's help in uncovering a website being prepared by O'Keefe that impersonates Quinn and targets Keane. Carrie enters the black ops house; after seeing that the van is in fact Sekou's, she is ambushed by Belli; Quinn intervenes and brutally murders Belli as revenge for Astrid's death. The solicitor general arrives with FBI agents, planning to use the van as evidence to prosecute Dar; as well, he has promised to grant Quinn immunity. Quinn uncovers evidence suggesting that the special ops team is involved in a planned attack on Keane. Carrie calls Keane's chief of staff to try to warn them, but a bomb hidden in the house's garage explodes, destroying the van, killing several people including the solicitor general, and temporarily knocking her out.
12. America First
Carrie and Quinn rush to Keane's headquarters, where the staff receive word of a bomb threat in the building. As they evacuate, Dar calls Carrie and warns that the threat is a ruse to lure Keane out of her hotel so she can be assassinated, with Quinn to be framed as the killer. Carrie stops Keane's car from leaving just before a bomb detonates outdoors. Quinn finds Carrie and Keane and escorts them to safety by driving through a barricade of armed soldiers sent to kill Keane; he is shot and dies once they are safe. Six weeks later, Keane has been inaugurated, and Carrie is working as her liaison to the intelligence community; several senior intelligence officials, including Dar, have been incarcerated. Dar tells Saul he did not intend what ultimately happened; he simply lost control of what he set in motion. Carrie is given a favorable report by her caseworker, which means she should be able to regain custody of Franny. She gets a call from Saul, who is being arrested, and learns that Keane is having dozens of innocent government officials apprehended in retaliation for the assassination attempt.
Season 7
1. Enemy of the State
Carrie and Franny are living in Washington, D.C., with Carrie's sister Maggie and her family. Carrie has left her job at the White House and is actively working to secure the release of 200 federal employees Keane has arrested since her inauguration. She plots to arrange a meeting between Dante Allen, her contact at the FBI, and Senator Sam Paley, hoping to get Dante to testify in Paley's Congressional investigation into Keane's misconduct, but Dante refuses to speak with him. Maggie is furious when she learns that Carrie involved Maggie's teenage daughter, Josie, in her scheme and that Josie left Franny alone with her boyfriend. Saul is still in federal prison; David Wellington, Keane's chief of staff, offers him the position of National Security Advisor, but he says he will accept it only if the 200 imprisoned federal employees are released. Carrie has Max install surveillance on Wellington. Keane is incensed when a military tribunal sentences General Jamie McClendon, who spearheaded the conspiracy to assassinate her, to life in prison rather than to death; she tells Wellington she will find someone to "fix" the situation. McClendon dies in custody after being poisoned.
2. Rebel Rebel
Carrie spots an unknown woman entering Wellington's apartment on a surveillance camera. Dante refuses to help her, so she posts a screenshot of the woman on a 4chan thread in an attempt to identify her, but is tricked by a hacker into downloading a virus that encrypts her hard drive with ransomware. Carrie uses sex to lure the hacker to a face-to-face and beats him until he unlocks her computer, threatening to kill him if he ever tries anything else. Brett O'Keefe, now a fugitive, takes shelter in Lucasville, Ohio with the staunchly right-wing Elkins family and makes a broadcast accusing Keane of arranging McClendon's death. In an effort to mend public perception, Wellington convinces Keane to release the 200 arrested federal employees and appoint Saul as National Security Advisor. Wellington places Saul in charge of the manhunt for O'Keefe. Saul identifies O'Keefe's location.
3. Standoff
Carrie's psychiatrist confirms that her medication is no longer working and prescribes a new treatment. Dante arrives at her house while she is heavily sedated; he identifies the woman in Wellington's apartment as Simone Martin, Wellington's girlfriend, and tells Carrie that Simone received a parking ticket close to McClendon's prison the day before McClendon died. Carrie breaks into Simone's apartment and collects evidence, but is arrested by police outside after neighbors report the break-in; Dante pulls strings to get her released and to have the arrest expunged from the record. Saul arrives at the Elkins' property with FBI agents and attempts to negotiate with O'Keefe. However, the family calls in armed reinforcements, leading to a standoff with the FBI. Realizing that the White House is losing control of the O'Keefe situation and needs to change the narrative, Wellington authorizes an airstrike on a Syrian weapons convoy that Keane has rejected, falsely claiming to now have her approval.
4. Like Bad at Things
Keane visits Wellington, and Carrie overhears him telling Keane it was he who authorized the airstrike. With Max's assistance, Carrie continues her investigation into Simone's movements. Maggie, upset that Carrie is not following her new treatment plan, forces her to take her medication; she goes to a friend to obtain other drugs to help her keep alert. Carrie recruits Dante to help her prove that Simone was working for Wellington when she made suspicious withdrawals totalling $50,000. Saul and O'Keefe lose control of the situation on the Elkins' property. The Elkins' teenage son J.J. is shot by an FBI patrol, and an FBI agent is taken hostage in retaliation. Paramedics are allowed to take J.J. to a hospital, where a man takes photos that are leaked to the press as evidence that J.J. is dead. Saul calls O'Keefe to warn him that the report is false, but O'Keefe does not pass this information on and J.J.'s father, enraged by the news, executes the captive FBI agent. An ensuing firefight results in several casualties, largely on the Elkins' side. O'Keefe survives and is taken into custody.
5. Active Measures
Amid concern over possible violence at an upcoming memorial for victims of the Lucasville massacre organized by people from there, Keane urges the wives of slain FBI agents to attend it. The event ultimately proceeds without incident after Mrs. Elkins welcomes the three women to the service. The result is a public relations victory for Keane. Saul visits Ivan Krupin in witness protection and presents his theory that Russian operative Yevgeny Gromov was responsible for the fake news story that sparked the Lucasville shootout, but Krupin says it is doubtful. Carrie assembles a team of former CIA colleagues, along with Dante and Max, to try to connect Wellington to McClendon's murder. Three team members, posing as the prison guards who received the payoff, force Simone to confirm that the $50,000 was a payment for the murder and demand that she get them an additional $100,000. Carrie expects that Simone will report this to Wellington, her presumed handler, but when she immediately goes to see him she says nothing about it.
6. Species Jump
Saul sets up a team to find Yevgeny. Simone is subpoenaed by Senator Paley's subcommittee; at a proffer session, she requests immunity in exchange for naming the individual who ordered her to deliver the $50,000. Carrie realizes that Simone plans to implicate Wellington, who Carrie now believes is innocent; she explains the situation to Saul, who helps her realize that Dante is likely setting her up and tells her Dante may be part of a Russian conspiracy to link McClendon's death to the White House. Carrie drugs Dante and has the rest of her team search his apartment while he is unconscious. Saul learns that a viral video of Wellington confronting Simone was disseminated by the same social media network that planted the fake story about J.J. Elkins, which leads him to believe the network is linked to Yevgeny. Ivan evades his FBI protection; after confronting Yevgeny, he asks Saul for a meeting, but when Saul reaches the meeting place, Ivan is no longer there, having been abducted by Yevgeny, who has him drowned.
7. Andante
Saul informs Wellington that Simone is a Russian agent and that she intends to implicate him in the conspiracy to murder McClendon. A stunned Wellington sends a letter of resignation to Keane, who refuses it. Saul forces Max to join his task force; they identify five occasions when Dante and Simone concurrently traveled to the same European cities, and Saul decides to pursue Dante. Carrie has an argument with Maggie and leaves the house with Franny; Dante allows them to stay with him at his apartment. Carrie tracks down Dante's ex-wife, who tells her that their marriage broke down due to Dante's resentment towards Carrie after being sent home in disgrace from Kabul four years earlier. Dante visits Maggie's house under the guise of collecting Franny's belongings and finds evidence that Carrie has compiled on him; as well, his ex-wife tells him about Carrie's visit. He confronts Carrie at his apartment that night about her discussion with his ex-wife, which leads to them having sex, but they are interrupted when Saul's team charge in and arrest Dante.
8. Lies, Amplifiers, F**king Twitter
Carrie convinces Saul to let her interrogate Dante; she presents their evidence to him, but fails to get him to talk without a lawyer. She goes to speak with Maggie, who admonishes her over the trauma she has inflicted on Franny and gives her a choice between seeking treatment and giving up custody of Franny to Maggie. Keane, facing pressure to resign from Senator Paley, has Wellington warn Moscow that the U.S. will treat Simone's testimony as a hostile act. The Russian ambassador notifies Yevgeny, whose team extracts Simone (who is revealed to be his lover) from the safehouse where Paley is keeping her. Carrie and Saul have an agent posing as a lawyer poison Dante using ink from a pen he was given to sign paperwork; before entering cardiac arrest, Dante, believing the Russians have poisoned him, says to Carrie that Simone told him the Russians poisoned McClendon. Saul and Carrie learn that Simone has escaped, leaving Dante (whose survival is in question) as their only witness.
9. Useful Idiot
Saul and Wellington meet with Senator Paley and convince him of the Russians' subterfuge, including Paley's own unwitting role. In a hospital, Dante tells Carrie he will cooperate by confirming he and Simone were Russian assets; he informs her that the Russians have a secret Twitter code that would alert Yevgeny's agents to dissolve their network. Saul's team deploy the Twitter code to identify other members of the network; on being informed that the code has been deployed, Yevgeny realizes that Dante is cooperating with the authorities, and defies his handlers by tracking Dante down at the hospital. Carrie learns from Maggie's husband, Bill, that Maggie is consulting a lawyer about taking custody of Franny; she races to Franny's school to leave with her. Dante calls Carrie and warns her that Yevgeny is in his hospital room; she rushes to save him, nearly hitting a frantic Franny with her car as she leaves the school. She arrives at the hospital only to learn that Dante is already dead, and suffers a severe psychotic break triggered by the shock of nearly killing her own daughter.
10. Clarity
Following Dante's death, Paley changes his mind and pushes to obtain the votes of enough members of Keane's Cabinet to invoke the Twenty-fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution and have her removed from office; Keane pre-emptively fires four Cabinet secretaries she distrusts. When Keane refuses to reverse her decision, Vice President Ralph Warner tells her he will present the Senate with a document declaring Keane unfit for office. Carrie undergoes another round of electroconvulsive therapy following her psychotic episode in the hospital. With Dante dead, Saul makes plans to exfiltrate Simone from Russia and requests Carrie's help in overseeing the mission. Carrie declines because she needs to change her life to be able to keep Franny. At a custody hearing the next day, Maggie testifies that Carrie is incapable of providing Franny with a stable home environment. Carrie decides to give up the custody battle and accepts a visitation agreement granting her access to Franny every other weekend. She takes up Saul's offer to lead the Russia operation.
11. All In
Senator Paley visits Dar Adal in jail for insight on Saul's motives in Russia; Dar tells him Saul must be running a covert operation there. Paley's chief of staff learns that Simone is still alive and, when Paley balks at doing so, tells the Russian ambassador about Saul's intention to extract her. In Moscow, Saul and Carrie sit down with SVR and GRU representatives, including Yevgeny, as a ruse to lure Yevgeny away from Simone. As they speak, Carrie's special ops team storms Simone's safehouse, only to be ambushed by armed guards. Carrie devises an alternative plan: confiscate $300M hidden in U.S. banks by SVR General Yakushin, and use it to leverage him into finding Simone. Yakushin reacts by sending an armed battalion to GRU headquarters, where Simone has been moved, sparking chaos on the streets. Carrie tells Simone she is now expendable to Yevgeny and convinces her she needs to leave Russia. Carrie and Simone wear wigs matching each other's hair and escape in separate cars; Yevgeny identifies Carrie's car as the one carrying Simone. In Washington, Warner relieves Keane of her command.
12. Paean to the People
Carrie diverts the Russians long enough for Saul and his team to reach the airport with Simone, but they are blocked from entering it. Warner, aware of Saul's mission and over Paley's objection, intervenes to have the Russian government let them go; they depart for the U.S. having no choice but to leave without Carrie, who is captured by Yevgeny. Simone testifies in Congress and confirms that the GRU plotted to sabotage the Keane administration; Paley is arrested as a conspirator. Keane is reinstated as President, but in her first public address, she speaks of the divisions in the country and announces that she will be resigning in favor of Warner, because she feels she has become part of the problem. Yevgeny threatens to withhold Carrie's medication unless she makes a statement that the CIA was responsible for the entire crisis, but she refuses. Seven months later, Saul secures Carrie's release in exchange for several Russian prisoners. When he receives her, he finds Carrie in severe delirium after all this time without her medication.
Season 8
1. Deception Indicated
Following her release from captivity in Russia, Carrie recovers at a hospital in Germany. Her poor performance on a polygraph test stirs concern among CIA officials that she may have betrayed her country during her months in captivity, most of which she cannot remember. Saul leads the U.S. effort to end the war in Afghanistan, but negotiations collapse when Vice President Abdul Qadir G'ulom refuses the proposed terms. Saul recruits Carrie to join him in Kabul to help salvage peace talks. Carrie learns that one of her former assets was executed by the Taliban on treason charges, and begins to worry about what she may have revealed during her captivity. Her concerns are exacerbated when Kabul station chief Mike Dunne confirms that Russia shares information with the Taliban. The next day, on her way to meet G'ulom, Carrie sees Yevgeny Gromov leave G'ulom's office.
2. Catch and Release
Carrie receives an anonymous tip regarding Samira Noori, an activist against G'ulom's regime whose husband died in a car bombing likely intended for her. Carrie searches Samira's apartment and finds evidence Samira collected on G'ulom's embezzlement of military funds. She uses this to leverage G'ulom to reverse his stance and release 1,000 Taliban prisoners per the peace deal. Carrie is later met by Yevgeny, who reveals himself as the source of the anonymous tip. Max intercepts Taliban communications, which capture now-leader Haissam Haqqani expressing his interest in ending the war; Saul sees an opportunity to negotiate with Haqqani. Tasneem Qureishi, now the head of the ISI, resolves to disrupt Saul's negotiations. During Saul's planned meeting with Haqqani in Peshawar, the ISI ambush Haqqani's convoy. Saul is captured and brought to Haqqani.
3. False Friends
Saul convinces Haqqani that the ISI was responsible for the ambush of his convoy and that a traitor in Haqqani's camp must have leaked information about the meeting. Haqqani deduces that his last living son, Jalal, betrayed him to Tasneem because he is opposed to the peace talks. Haqqani exiles Jalal from their household and agrees to the terms of the peace deal. Jalal is picked up by Tasneem. Carrie agrees to a meeting with Yevgeny, which Mike uses to test her allegiance, but Yevgeny arranges to meet her at a location where the CIA is unable to listen in on their conversation. He says he wants to renew a relationship they developed in Moscow, of which she has no memory; he apologizes for leaving Carrie alone in the asylum and tells her he later saved her life by preventing her from committing suicide. He says they became close and, as proof, reveals that Carrie told him she once considered drowning Franny. Carrie tells Mike it is unclear whether Yevgeny can be recruited as a CIA asset, but she should stay in Kabul to find out.
4. Chalk One Up
Carrie learns Mike has a recording of her meeting with Yevgeny that agents are trying to decipher. She is taken to Bagram Airfield, where Saul tells her President Warner is arriving in Kabul to announce the end of the war in person and wants to speak to her; on arriving, Warner thanks her for her service, referring to her ordeal in Moscow, and says he wants to give her a position in the White House on their return to Washington. He departs for Combat Outpost Steedley, where Max is stationed, to make the announcement there alongside Afghan President Daoud. Meanwhile, Carrie saves Samira from being kidnapped by her Taliban brother-in-law, who intends to forcibly marry her after her husband's death. On its way back from the military outpost, the helicopter carrying Warner and Daoud disappears off the CIA's radar; its wreckage is discovered in a forest by the crew of an escort helicopter, who spot Taliban soldiers in the area and open fire. In response, the Taliban shoot down the second helicopter with an RPG blast.
5. Chalk Two Down
Troops from Combat Outpost Steedley, accompanied by Max, arrive at the site of the helicopter crash and confirm that Presidents Warner and Daoud have both been killed. General G'ulom inherits the Afghan presidency and unilaterally declares martial law, ordering his army to apprehend Haqqani, whom he blames for the presidents' deaths. Saul warns Haqqani, believing him to be innocent, but Haqqani is unable to flee Kabul. Carrie learns that Warner's helicopter was switched at the last minute, but determines that it was a routine swap, leading her to speculate that the crash of the helicopter the presidents were in may have been an accident. A massive Taliban attack risks overwhelming the U.S. troops; on Wellington's recommendation, Vice President Benjamin Hayes orders the site abandoned and bombed to avoid having the President's body fall into Taliban hands. Carrie contacts Max and tells him he first has to retrieve the helicopter's flight recorder so the cause of the crash can be determined; Max succeeds, but the entire squad is killed by the Taliban and he is forced to surrender.
6. Two Minutes
The Taliban fighter who captured Max holds him prisoner and sells off the contents of his backpack, including the flight recorder. Carrie asks Yevgeny to use his Taliban contacts to help locate Max, and she discreetly disables the CIA's electronic surveillance of the region for two minutes to allow him to do so. President G'ulom threatens to execute 300 Taliban prisoners if Haqqani does not surrender, and he manipulates the inexperienced Hayes, now President, into agreeing with his strongman tactics. Haqqani decides to surrender to the U.S. in hopes of obtaining a fair trial and shows up at the embassy. Mike informs Saul that the recording of Carrie's earlier conversation with Yevgeny proves she lied about the nature of her relationship with him, and he is concerned that she may have unwittingly helped Yevgeny assassinate President Warner. Saul confronts Carrie and says he is sending her back to Germany to continue her treatment, but Carrie slips away before boarding her plane and is picked up on the tarmac by Yevgeny.
7. F**ker Shot Me
Saul turns Haqqani over to G'ulom, who releases his Taliban prisoners. President Hayes, wanting to be seen to be avenging Warner's death, refuses to allow Saul to release a classified recording that would prove Haqqani's innocence. Yevgeny helps Carrie find Max, who tells her the flight recorder was taken to nearby Kohat, but he is then removed to a different location. Carrie and Yevgeny follow him to the second location; Carrie calls Mike to request a special ops team to extract Max, but decides to go in herself when they fail to arrive. She sees Haqqani's son, Jalal, standing behind a camera while Jalal's men force Max into an orange jumpsuit; Yevgeny stops her from intervening. With Haqqani's trial approaching, Saul convinces Tasneem to help him prove Haqqani's innocence to avoid bloodshed. They persuade the presiding judge in the case to grant a continuance, but she is replaced on the day of the trial, in which Haqqani is summarily found guilty and sentenced to death.
8. Threnody(s)
Jalal threatens to execute Max if Haqqani dies. President Hayes requests and obtains a 24-hour stay of Haqqani's execution from G'ulom so that an attempt can be made to rescue Max first, but John Zabel, his hawkish new foreign policy advisor, convinces Hayes to reverse course. Haqqani is executed and Carrie sees Jalal shoot Max. Jalal attends a Taliban leadership council meeting in Miranshah, Pakistan and sways the other participants to support him by making a speech in which he falsely claims to have shot down both American helicopters. Zabel obtains a video of Jalal's speech and uses it to persuade Hayes to threaten Pakistan: if it does not arrest Jalal and turn him over, U.S. forces will come to get him. Saul arrives with a special ops team to retrieve Max's body; Carrie informs him that Max gave her the flight recorder's location, and he says he will work with her to find it. After the special ops team tries to arrest her despite Saul's intervention, Carrie leaves with Yevgeny.
9. In Full Flight
Pakistan begins moving its mobile nuclear arsenal towards the Afghan border in response to the United States' threats. Tasneem attempts to convince Jalal to go into hiding, but Jalal, empowered by the bolstered ranks of the Taliban, refuses. Tasneem decides that the ISI's best course of action is to protect Jalal. Carrie and Yevgeny search bazaars in Kohat looking for the flight recorder, while evading a CIA search team. Carrie dupes her young coworker Jenna Bragg into giving her the location of the team's safehouse and has Yevgeny direct the local police to apprehend them, giving her time to find the flight recorder. Carrie tracks down the broker in possession of the recorder and buys it from him; Yevgeny arrives, and the two listen to the contents, which confirm that the presidents' helicopter crashed due to mechanical failure. Yevgeny sedates Carrie and has his men confiscate the flight recorder.
10. Designated Driver
Carrie calls Saul to report that the helicopter crash resulted from a mechanical failure, and that the Russians are now in possession of the flight recorder. Saul reaches out to his contacts in Russia, but realizes that they have no interest in trading the item. Carrie is brought to meet Yevgeny, who offers her the flight recorder in exchange for the identity of Saul's deeply-embedded asset in the Kremlin. Carrie then turns herself in at the CIA's Kabul station, where she is arrested and put on a plane back to the U.S. Hoping to de-escalate the rising political tensions between the U.S. and Pakistan, Wellington negotiates the release of the special ops team in Kohat. However, Jalal forces one of his men to carry out a suicide bombing at the Afghanistan-Pakistan border where the soldiers' release is taking place.
11. The English Teacher
Back in Washington, Carrie faces nearly a dozen federal charges, but Saul has her released into his custody. Searching for Saul's Russian asset, Carrie tracks down Andrei Kuznetsov, a man Saul had exfiltrated from East Berlin in 1987. Kuznetsov informs her that Saul used red leather books to communicate with him. Flashbacks reveal that Saul's asset is Anna Pomerantseva, a former English teacher for the KGB who volunteered to turn against the Kremlin after her entire class was executed because their classmate, Kuznetsov, defected. In the present, Anna is the GRU's head interpreter, joining them at a United Nations summit. Carrie discovers notes tucked in the bindings of the red leather books in Saul's collection, which correspond to various American intelligence coups. She arranges a meeting with Yevgeny to report her findings, still unable to identify the asset. Yevgeny proposes an alternative way to neutralize the asset: eliminate Saul.
12. Prisoners of War
Carrie admits her deal with Yevgeny to Saul, who refuses to name his asset. Carrie has GRU agents sedate Saul, then flies to the West Bank and tells Saul's sister Dorit that Saul is dead, as a ruse to enact Saul's "legacy plan" to pass his asset onto Carrie in the event of his death. Dorit gives Carrie a USB drive containing a video message from Saul identifying Anna as his asset. Carrie shows it to Yevgeny, who reports it to his superiors at the UN summit. Anna kills herself to avoid capture by the Russians. With the asset's identity in their possession, Russia publicly plays the contents of the flight recorder, successfully averting nuclear war between the U.S. and Pakistan. Two years later, Carrie and Yevgeny live together in Moscow. Saul receives a package containing an advance copy of a book Carrie has written denouncing the U.S. He finds a note in the binding – mirroring Anna's tradecraft – with a note from Moscow indicating how to defeat the Russians' missile defense system. He realizes it is from Carrie, who has become his new Russian asset.
