When his students struggle to comprehend the themes of love, sex, and slander in William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, Mr. Turner assigns a modern, alternative project. He tasks the class with using the school's media equipment to videotape interviews with peers, friends, and family regarding their personal views on love & sex & slander. Cory and Topanga are paired together for the assignment. Because they stay late after hours inside the school building to edit their video package, they accidentally fall asleep together on the classroom floor. The next morning, they are discovered by Janitor Bud and Acting Principal Mr. Feeny. Word of the incident rapidly spreads through the student body, quickly escalating into a massive school scandal The rumor mill distorts the innocent event, leading everyone to believe that Cory and Topanga slept together in a romantic capacity. While Topanga is deeply humiliated and angered by the damage to her reputation, Cory initially enjoys his sudden boost in popularity and social status among his peers, which further upsets her. After realizing how much the gossip has hurt Topanga, Cory uses their final video presentation to clear her name, publicly debunking the rumors and restoring her reputation. Meanwhile, Eric becomes overly self-conscious about his physical appearance after discovering he has a small bald spot on the back of his head. He goes to great, comedic lengths to conceal it from everyone, including trying out absurd hairstyles and hats to protect his vanity.
