Y: The Last Man #26

In Hero Brown's childhood, she played pretend with her little brother Yorick Brown, scaring him with the idea that a statue had come to life and named herself Queen Victoria. As a teenager, she is raped at a party by a college student. Once she graduates from college, she decides to forgo her study of literature to drive an ambulance and help others instead, to her father's consternation. On the day of the gendercide, her boyfriend Joe dies: he is the only man that has been good to her. Shortly after the cataclysm, she is eating cat food in a derelict grocery store when she is accosted by several Daughters of the Amazon. After a brief fight, their leader Victoria entices her to join them.

Several months later, she is held prisoner in Marrisville, Ohio, where a community of women have helped deprogram several other Daughters, but Hero proves to be too difficult to break: she has persistent hallucinations that Victoria still speaks to her and she is obsessed with finding her brother, the last man alive. She manages to escape and briefly reunites with her mother in Washington, D. C. before heading off to find him.

In the present day, she is on his tail and comes to a safe site in rural Kansas where astronaut Ciba Weber has recently come to ground and given birth to her son, Vladimir, Jr. and visions of Victoria tell Hero that the child has to die.

Y: The Last Man #27

On July 17, 2002, Yorick Brown went to a magic shop to buy an engagement ring for his girlfriend Beth Deville, but his proposal was interrupted later that day by a spontaneous gendercide that killed all males other than himself and his monkey Ampersand. Around two years later, he has been escorted across the United States of America by Agent 355 of the Culper Ring to a laboratory run by Allison Mann, a geneticist who hopes to restart the human race.

He takes a break from the experiments to visit a basketball game for his birthday and when he and Agent 355 leave, they are accosted by Anna Strong and her Setauket Ring: an offshoot of the Culper Ring who are obsessed with capturing the Amulet of Helene, which they think is responsible for the gendercide. Agent 355 and Yorick barely escape from them, but an agent manages to steal the ring he got for Beth years ago. The duo arrive back at Allison's home and Agent 355 insists that they have to abandon the laboratory, as the Setauket Ring are too dangerous and she can't ensure their safety. Allison protests, but as the two argue, Yorick falls violently ill.

Meanwhile, Hero Brown continues hunting for her brother, mere miles away and haunted by hallucinations of her former cult leader Victoria.

Y: The Last Man #28

Agent 355 and Yorick Brown narrowly escaped an attack from the Setauket Ring, losing Yorick's engagement ring, but returning alive and in one piece to Allison Mann's apartment, where Yorick immediately begins vomiting blood. Allison proposes that his engagement ring may have had a property that kept him and Ampersand alive. The ailing Yorick has a fever dream where he and his fiancee Beth Deville are in a science fiction world that and they are doomed to die. Allison insists that Agent 355 must retrieve the ring, no matter the danger.

Hero Brown continues looking for her brother, driven on by visions of her dead former cult leader Victoria. Hero is unaware the she is also being stalked herself by Toyota, directed by Dr. M.

Agent 355 raids the Setauket Ring and Anna Strong claims that the Amulete of Helene that Agent 355 has been tasked with preserving caused the gendercide. They argue and Strong says that she will exchange the ring for the amulet in one hour at a neutral site. She agrees and Strong destroys the Amulet to ensure that the gendercide curse cannot be reversed. Agent 355 attempts to leave, disgusted by the petty power plays of the Setauket Ring, but she is assaulted by Hero Brown.

Y: The Last Man #29

Hero Brown quest to find her brother Yorick Brown has lead to her interrupting a dispute between Agent 355 and the Setauket Ring. Hero mentions the existence of a living man and this intrigues Anna Strong. Allison Mann cares for the ailing Yorick as Toyota attempts to abduct Ampersand. He has a dream of Agent 711 reminding him to fight for his life and comes to from a stupor. Allison pieces together that he has a simple infection and is not going to die. As she treats him, she has a revelation about how Ampersand and Yorick survived the death of all other males.

Y: The Last Man #30

Allison Mann has discovered why Ampersand and Yorick Brown are the only two males to have survived a global gendercide: material from the monkey's feces uniquely synthesized with Yorick's biology. As she explains the details, Agent 355 returns from her confrontation with the Setauket Ring with an injured Hero Brown in tow. Before Hero can explain herself, Yorick assaults her for killing Sonia. Yorick storms out as Toyota observes them, waiting for an opportunity to abduct Ampersand.

On the roof of Allison's laboratory, Agent 355 gives some photographs to Yorick: his sister has been following their every step across America, taking notes on how all of his friends and loved ones are doing. Agent 355 is convinced that she is recovering from the brainwashing done by the Daughters of the Amazon and she also helped her recover the engagement ring that Yorick plans to give Beth Deville. Hero still struggles with hallucinations of Victoria, whom she stabs to death in a vision while she's sedated.

Tokyo takes her chance to finally abscond away with Ampersand.

Y: The Last Man #31

Toyota has finally succeeded in stealing Ampersand. She has made it out of Allison Mann's laboratory, but Agent 355 can follow her using the same tracking device that Hero Brown followed to find them. Yorick Brown runs out to catch her and Agent 355 finds him, telling him not to go it alone. They catch up with the thief on the after Ampersand howls. Agent 355 and Toyota fight, with Agent 355 severely wounded. Hero Brown shows up just in time to save her brother's life. Toyota disappears with the monkey.

The Browns manage to drag the mortally-wounded Agent 355 back to the laboratory. The next morning, Hero mentions that she is taking a stool sample back to the hot suite in Kansas, where geneticists can see if they can synthesize a method for Ciba Weber's son to leave the safe environment. The siblings share a tearful goodbye and reconcile.

While shipping the experiments back and forth, two capuchins got out of their cages and the handlers at JFK International Airport randomly shipped them out: one was the experiment and the other was Ampersand, a that was to be trained by Yorick Brown. The man and monkey formed a bond traveling across America after the gendercide left them the only living males.
